The Tory Party has been on a journey towards being a radical, illiberal and thoroughly un-conservative political force. This was fully on view with its tabloid-pleasing but irresponsible approach to human rights - promoted by May, Raab, Patel, Rees Mogg...
Many centre right Tories didn’t see the danger of indulging in Europe-bashing and unprincipled politicking with our human rights protections. It turned out to be a dry run for Brexit and now we see the consequences - the ideologues have taken over. Gauke is far too late tbh
Grieve saw the danger early as he is a man of principle. He took the flack and was called a traitor. Too few supported him. Obviously with some honourable exceptions
All the ideologues such as Raab, Rees Mogg, Cummings needed was a populist stooge who cared more about power than principle to be PM. Now they have him
