New idea from govt is an election 15 Oct, officially to avoid Sukkot on 14 Oct.

But there’s another reason.

The 2/3 majority vote Govt needs under FTPA to call it could then happen Mon 9 Sept, by which time the anti No Deal Bill should have been agreed already...
Remember there have to be 25 working days between an election being called and it happening

Call it 9 Sept, earliest election is 15 Oct
Johnson wants the election before the 17 Oct European Council. “Give me a majority so I can go there and get the deal!” will be his line

In reality that’s only barely plausible but it’s clearly what the Tories are trying
This means there’s not only the battle for sequencing this week (anti No Deal law, only then vote for an election) but also from the government a need for speed
With the fear pro Brexit Lords could seek to delay the bill with amendments, might the Tory whips step in? Acknowledge the bill will happen, but if it does then quickly

/ends
Apologies - I’d fallen for the government line that Sukkot was 14 Oct. It’s 14 AND 15 Oct. So if it’s actually the government’s reason then it better be 16 Oct for the election...
