Labour want to axe private schools, which account for 615,000 pupils. But that means the Government would have to pay for 615,000 more state school places. If we take a £5,000 average per pupil per year, that's £3 billion more a year that will have to be found somehow.
Over the course of 12 years (average education) that's an extra £60,000 per pupil from the taxpayer and £36 billion overall. These are significant numbers!
Not to mention abolishing private schools will do nothing whatsoever to raise standards in state schools. It's in effect a levelling down. We end up with a less educated population on average. (Not all private schools are good. Not all state schools are bad. But on average...)
