A reminder that, apart from the US, there are many other democracies with a Supreme Court charged with defending the constitution and human rights.
Try Ireland, for a start. Or Germany. Or France. Or, if you insist on crossing the Atlantic, Canada.
The ignorance of so many U.K. politicians of any foreign political system apart from the US is a really serious problem.
And here, it means that the knee jerk reaction to the proposition that a Supreme Court active in defending the constitution and human rights might be a good thing is to point to the serious problems with the US system.
But, as I said, many other, and better, models are available.

Absolutely. “Surrender Act” is a gross and deliberate lie. The Benn Burt Act surrenders precisely nothing to the EU. It is about who takes the decisions on the U.K. side: Johnson on his own, or the House of Commons?
That point is additional to the critical point that “surrender” is the language of war. There is no war.
And it is not “surrender” to refrain from a self-destructive act that simply postpones the necessary compromises with the EU.

Any plausible definition of “elites” includes the Professor of Politics, Philosophy and Law at King’s College, London.
That may seem snarky: but the key point is that anyone who blames “elites” needs to be pinned down as to precisely who they mean and precisely what those people should have done and didn’t.
If they can’t or won’t do that (and Tasoulias’ tweet didn’t do that) then it’s simply adding to the crisis and dysfunction of our politics rather than making any contribution to solving them.

Many reasons why it’s not good at all. But the narrow legal one is that the last 45 seconds of this extraordinary scene is - and I don’t say this sort of thing lightly - a straightforward and blatant lie by Johnson.
The Benn Act does not give the EU the power to decide how long the extension is. The House of Commons remains in control.
As to the rest of this vile and deeply shocking performance by Johnson, I cannot hope to improve on @stephenkb.

We've just released the final report by @Alston_UNSR, the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme #poverty, on his visit to the #UK. The report is available here: undocs.org/A/HRC/41/39/Ad…. A few key takeaways:
Some have asked me why a UN expert on #poverty would visit the #UK. Unfortunately, although the UK is the world’s 5th largest economy, 14 million are in poverty, child poverty is rising & predicted to reach 40% by 2021, homelessness is up 60%, and food bank use has skyrocketed.
To understand #poverty in the #UK, you have to look at the massive disinvestment in social support since 2010: the end of a centralized social fund, changes to the ways benefits are capped & calculated that substantially reduce their value, the decimation of civil legal aid, etc.
