This should be major news. How can one reconcile shutting down ways for people to lower their carbon footprint in the face of a climate emergency with any notion of good governance? 1/4 #AbLeg
This is not "cutting down the deficit". This is cutting down on competition for the oil and gas sector. This is a slap in the face of Albertans who do care about the environment and want to do their part. 2/4
This is part of the $100 M the UCP has cut from climate initiatives. 3/4

This is not cutting back on surplus expenses. These are the actions of a government that either does not believe in climate science or chooses, because of ideology, to encourage climate change to run its course. This is not a government that has our best interests at heart. 4/4

Why is this news, you may ask... Well, it means that every time your doctor send you for a screening test - blood, urine, mammogram, colonoscopy, or for a diagnostic test - X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, CT-scan, etc., YOU will be paying directly for it.
Or perhaps you will be paying higher insurance premiums so they can pay for it on your behalf. In the US, insurers have a reputation for questioning and not covering some tests. The more tests you have, the more your premiums go up. Whether insurance covers them or not...

Jason Kenney and the UCP are using the argument that Alberta is paying more for things like healthcare and education than other provinces. They say salaries are too high here in comparison. #AbLeg #cdnpoli 1/5
They don't want people to realise that the cost of living is also higher in Alberta than in other provinces. For teachers and nurses and so on to have the same standard of living as their counterparts in other provinces, they must make more money. 2/5
You can't make an equivalency between the cost of living in AB and MB, for example, and then say Alberta teachers should be paid what MB teachers are paid. There would be a lot of Albertan teachers who could no longer afford their homes. 3/5

There's a reason for that, you know. Things cost more in Alberta. Houses, food, tools, everything... contractors charge more. Wages are higher in areas like health care and education and construction because housing costs more, food costs more... 2/7
It's not comparing apples to apples when you line up Albertan expenditures with, say, Manitoban expenditures. In Manitoba, housing costs less, food costs less, and wages are lower, on average. 3/7

"A barrel of Alberta heavy crude has a lower carbon footprint than the average barrel around the world." Really? Based on what? Here's Masnadi et al data on global crude supply. No, AB barrels are not below the global average. 2/N
What's the omission? Perhaps the Premier is referring to other heavy oil barrels with a field-weighted average? Perhaps the Premier has a citation that he can share to that effect. There are certainly some higher-emissions barrels, as shown here via California import data. 3/N

The German government unveiled a major policy package to combat #climate change. The subsequent discussion in the German media shows the huge political and economic cost of a simple-minded focus on #carbon pricing – it’s the 1980s all over again! A Thread @BMF_Bund @JWMason1
The policy package contains a mix of mainly sensible measures: A slowly increasing carbon price, public investment (public trains), subsidies for switching to green technology, transfers to compensate “losers”, and a plan to move out of coal energy.
What happened in the subsequent media discussion is very interesting. As expected, there was critique of certain transfers and subsidies that some groups did not like (“waste of money”). Also, the opposition parties were critical – no surprise here.

Something @jkenney has repeatedly failed to mention - rebates for lower-income families have increased their purchasing power as they generally have a smaller carbon footprint - taking transit & living in smaller homes. That income boost will now disappear. #ableg
As noted in @edmontonspc's Feb '17 Profile of Poverty in #yeg:

"[w/ rebates], most low income households will likely come out ahead from the carbon levy [as] people living in low income tend to live in smaller [homes], use transit, & drive less" livingwagecanada.ca/files/4515/009… #ableg
That's one of many steps our gov't took that helped to cut child poverty in half from 2015-17.

Much like the 33% cut in small biz tax & support for public transit/LRT & green rural infrastructure, I think that's a good use of funds collected from a price on pollution. #ableg

Society pays taxes for a reason. Those dollars collected are designed to go to needed infrastructure, repair & maintenance as well as programs that save us money in the long run and make our society a better place to live. It's literally the governments JOB to spend those $$ 2/
