Every attempt is being made to circumvent end-to-end encryption for online messaging platforms. This is most widely used in India on Whatsapp due to its wide user base. It is the only effective safety tool for people to avoid surveillance.

Such technical safeguards are important as legal ones do not exist. Surveillance powers are not being reconciled with the reality of the 9 judge bench privacy judgement. No movement for surveillance reform through judicial oversight & parliamentary reporting.

Two privacy threatening bills listed in the Rajya Sabha tomorrow.

1. Aadhaar Amendment Bill

2. DNA Profiling Bill

Both of them have been sent from the Lok Sabha despite a credible and clear ask by opposition MPs to:

1. Don't bulldoze

2. First bring a privacy law

An intermediary is anyone who receives, stores or transmits an electronic record on behalf of someone. Includes your telecom provider, social media websites, e-commerce sites & search engines. Big, small and tiny.

Blogger and technologist Ahmed Mansoor has fought against oppression & for digital rights in the United Arab Emirates for over a decade.

In 2018—after a year in solitary confinement—he was given a 10 year sentence for spreading "false information" online. eff.org/offline/ahmed-…
Mansoor was one of the first to highlight attacks on free expression on the Emirati Internet.

When UAE news and discussion site majan.net was shut down and its owner and a contributor was arrested in 2006, Mansoor organized a successful campaign to free them.
Mansoor continued to push back against the UAE authorities’ efforts to control or punish Internet expression. He petitioned against a draft online media law in 2009, which was subsequently abandoned by the UAE government.
