NEW: "I nearly died but was still presented with a £93,000 bill for my treatment" - Simba Mujakachi writes in @MetroUK on how the #HostileEnvironment has affected him - and many others metro.co.uk/2019/12/09/i-n… (thread) #JusticeForSimba #PatientsNotPassports

Simba had a stroke
His family were told he only had a 30% chance of survival
Simba survived the operation, which involved removing a piece of his skull, but was left paralysed on his left side

In the stroke rehabilitation unit, Simba was presented with a bill for £93,000

As part of the ‘#HostileEnvironment’, the Conservative govt changed the law in 2017 so that ‘ineligible migrants’ have to pay up-front for ‘non-urgent’ care.

Yet even though Simba's operation was needed to save his life, he has to pay for it.

Free at the point of need?

Simba had already been asked to pay >£6,000 for treatment
"I didn’t want to get into any more debt so, 3 months before I had my stroke, I stopped going...

I do not think I would have had a stroke if I had been able to get the treatment I needed & if I hadn’t been so stressed"

"The truth is that there are so many stories like mine, of people whose lives have been turned upside down by the #HostileEnvironment.
Charging people to use the NHS just doesn’t make sense –we know that preventative care is both better for the patient and cheaper for the NHS"

Simba is sadly far from alone.
Earlier this week @cjayanetti reported on an anonymous woman presented with a £150,000 upfront charge she of course couldn't pay, denied cancer treatment for months as a result theguardian.com/society/2019/d… #PatientsNotPassports

In that piece, @AnnaK_Miller of @DOTW_UK says
"In the last six months Doctors of the World’s caseworkers have supported 18 people who have had treatment withheld.”

The family and Dr of the anonymous woman mentioned above both appealed to local MP and health secretary @MattHancock for help.
Even though Hancock was presented with clear signs that the rules were not being followed, there is no evidence he intervened. #PatientsNotPassports

@MattHancock's apparent refusal to intervene - despite claims he would made to the parliamentary health select committee and BBC’s @VictoriaLIVE - echoes that of Theresa May, who refused to help 'Albert Thompson' (real name Sylvester Marshall)

“They have traumatised our lives... They don’t care about people. They disregard us and think we’re trash”

Pauline Pennant was given a £4,388 bill
NHS debt collectors warned her she could be detained by immigration officials
She'd worked as a nurse
