@DavidHenigUK @AllieRenison have quite rightly highlighted that Government is not thinking/working through trade offs in relation to future trade relationship with EU - what matters most Cakeism no longer available
Similarly Govt needs to think through immigration, housing & infrastructure, NHS and social care priorities
Without EU construction workers absolutely no chance that housing and infrastructure aspirations can be met - how long will visas be supplied for?
Similarly NHS nursing increase will need more migrant support whatever we hear about bursaries etc - guess NHS will target Philippines, Africa and EU. Can these individuals get residency after 5 years?
UK Social care is so dependent on EU staff - Govt needs to retain all existing EU talent and then think how to attract more given demand for skilled support can only increase as population ages Social Care workers don’t earn £30k and are not at the moment treated like NHS
Then we come to Farming and food production so dependent on EU talent whether seasonal (farming) or permanent (food production) again how long will visas be provided for
Australian Points based systems sound attractive but who decides on need - when not market determined FOM Remember Australian system designed to boost number of immigrants
As @jdportes has regularly said state planning normally fails and setting a migration target is state planning of employment
Similarly setting monetary cap is distorting pay levels - some say it encourages productivity/mechanisation may be true in farming but generally not nursing/social care/construction
Will be fascinating to observe as @BorisJohnson learns that most decisions involve difficult trade offs - easy decision not available
