i'm just constantly astonished at what a rancid pile of shit windows 10 is
i've never seen anything like it. i have used every version of windows ever released after 95, heavily, and never, never anything remotely this asinine
shortly after installing a brand new copy of windows onto a brand new ssd on a brand new motherboard and cpu, I found that my start menu just simply did not work. i did some lengthy googling and discovered this could be fixed with a registry adjustment. Nobody knows why.
it worked. I changed a 0x1 to an 0x2 and my start menu came back. no explanation available.
my motherboard has built in wifi/BT. i went to use my gamepad today, and I'm told bluetooth is off. I check device manager and there is no bluetooth or wifi.
After some googling (and of course this is a vague windows problem so, results are 99% forums full of foreign call center workers being paid pennies a day to tell people to run sfc /scannow for some nebulous reason) I learn that I should try enabling hidden devices in devman
Sure enough, there's all my shit, and they're all labeled (as the poster described) with Code 45, which means... "device is not connected." Except, that's not what Windows does when a device isn't connected. It fucking. Disappears from devman.
So that's not the real problem, the real problem is that the hardware is (as I expected as soon as this happened) in some fucked up dumbshit Power State (god fuck the PC platform FUCK the PC platform FUCK THE PC PLATFORM i never want to hear "power" again in my ENTIRE LIFE)
windows works fine as long as you do not use any element of ACPI, which has never been implemented on the PC platform. every semblance of ACPI or related hardware APIs is an alpha at best that was not meant to ever be used.
the single, sole element of ACPI that works is the shut down system call. nothing else. All of the rest is completely, fundamentally unusable. It simply doesn't work.
What has happened here, I say with no evidence but total confidence - and I will turn out to be right - is that Windows asked my wifi/bt controller to go to sleep to save twenty milliwatts, as if I'm on a fucking laptop battery in 1998, and the device went into a coma.
If I'm lucky, some kind of bullshit tomfoolery will eventually dredge it out. I'll probably have to reinstall windows, because you can bet the underdeveloped ACPI implementation has cached the power state of this device and is now wedged in a chicken-and-egg
Probably on every bootup the wifi adapter happily wakes up and then windows helpfully reminds it that it was in a coma.

And of course none of this can be inspected unless you're one of six guys at Microsoft who know the native API.
I did have the idea a little bit ago, "maybe it's in airplane mode." I mean, I didn't do that. But Windows 10 just does things sometimes, without user input. Things that either a clueless MS intern with too much power or a boss with too little knowledge thought you would like.
But I can't open the "action center" to check. Because it just doesn't work. This install of windows is maybe two months old - this feature just doesn't work. Mostly the button does nothing; sometimes I see the dialog slide out from the side of the screen before vanishing.
This is dog shit. None of this should be possible. I found out the fucking calculator doesn't have square roots unless you select Scientific and then *press a 2nd button, like you would on a real calculator, to change the function of several of the buttons*
For an app built in to an OS that literally refuses to operate on a screen smaller than 1024x768, they did this instead of just putting more buttons on there. Like the old one they had that was perfect for 20 years.
The fix may have been to shut down, hit the power switch on my power supply, then power back up. I'll never know, since I'd done another thing first, but someone suggested that on a forum.
Apparently PCs just... don't shut down anymore. Even clicking "shut down" doesn't shut them down, they go into some fucked up hibernate state I didn't consent to, where - surprise surprise - power states don't fucking get reset.
None of this shit is called for.
I'm so tired
i just want them to stop. just stop, stop fucking breaking shit. microsoft already owns the entire market and always will. they will be here *eternally.* they could fire 90% of their employees and coast forever just doing security patches and be millionaires.
please just fucking stop just stop just stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop
