We might be making progress. This paragraph is broadly correct (although questions remain as to why we would want to diverge in areas of global regulation like aircraft or car safety)
This paragraph is not correct though despite being the new Brexiteer mantra. The Single Market has multiple identities (recall all those Brexit supporting businesses proclaiming it didn't really exist in their area), and there's no global trend away from (or towards) EU approach
And it is the detail that business needs to see, of what is meant by alignment and what barriers to trade will therefore exist, as per @AllieRenison and IoD survey out this morning theguardian.com/politics/2020/…

Another day, another UK "ramps up pressure" in trade talks story. Forget the empty threat stuff, there's a real story here. The UK is reversing course on tariff policy, and it's another step away from "buccaneering global Britain" Brexit.
Recall the no-deal tariffs - we were going to slash tariffs compared to the EU, in what I was told by another department insider was an HMT led "pure Minford" approach. Any remaining tariffs had to be argued for. A radical approach. gov.uk/government/pub…
What I heard this week was that it was Canada's decision not to roll over the existing CETA deal for the UK, because with the no-deal tariffs there was little extra benefit for them, which was the main factor in the change of plan. Without tariff reduction what could we offer?

@AdamsonPaul Fundamentally there will always be regulatory cooperation and alignment between developed economies. The key for me is to accept this and put in place between UK and EU a structure which can evolve over time. It will be new, no existing model quite works.
@AdamsonPaul I'd welcome thoughts from others with trade and regulation experience, for the complexity of the subject is such that it is almost impossible for any individual to do the whole subject justice. @MichelleEgan14?

That's a US trade deal first, an EU trade deal as the priority, and Japan first. And that's just the different government messages this week. When does ambition become confusion? And what's the grand purpose anyway?

Next week we might hear about Australia or New Zealand first...
All very well bragging about the number of trade negotiators. But those negotiators need to know there is a central government machinery which takes consistent decisions, and doesn't undermine communications with negotiating partners through clumsy messaging
It would also help if we could distinguish between "keen to do a trade deal with us" (everyone, if it suits them) and "there is a plan that the UK has and this is how everything fits" (not yet in three and a half years).

Swing away from #Leave is widespread and happening broadly across the UK, specifically in England, Wales, Cornwall and the North. Overall estimated level of support for Leave is 6 percentage points lower across UK, but masks significant heterogeneity. 2/
We follow similar approach as in earlier work with @essobecker and @DennisNovy to decompose the geographic variation to identify which factors are capturing the variation across the UK in the swing away from #Leave to #Remain.... 3/

Being the financial capital through which the majority of € is traded while still keeping the £.

The UK has taken the lead in efforts for EU enlargement. It pushed for the inclusion of Eastern European states. It pushed for Turkey to get its shit together so that it could join (which it made very slow progress with, and has largely been undone by Erdogan)
After #Brexit, the UK will have no influence on EU enlargement. In fact, as setting the EU as a rival, every country that joins the EU will a) strengthen the EU, and b) unravels any trade deals that the UK will have made with that country, isolating it further.

1. All of this flagged up by #Remain before A50 passed by the CONS & Labour..I remember distinctly our warnings that if it went thru Control passed to the EU27. It goes to prove how much damage both parties are prepared to inflict on our country to impose their ideology on us all
2. This price to buy a Transition that merely allows our politicians to kick the real impact down the road so they can con ppl into thinking things will be fine after #Brexit. If we don't #StopBrexitSaveBritain we'll be out on 29/03/19 & it will be too late to avoid the cliff.
3. This is all about leaving the EU 29/03/19..once out we've lost our BEST POSSIBLE DEAL, it will be Pay & Obey No Say on many issues ad infinitum; we'll never get back in. At that point we lose Rights...we're already losing jobs to the EU as companies relocate at least in part.
