Trade and regulation is a big and complex subject, and early UK-EU sparring is demoralising. I think there's a way through for the future relationship, and have made some suggestions here... (with thanks to @AdamsonPaul) encompass-europe.com/comment/findin…
@AdamsonPaul Fundamentally there will always be regulatory cooperation and alignment between developed economies. The key for me is to accept this and put in place between UK and EU a structure which can evolve over time. It will be new, no existing model quite works.
@AdamsonPaul I'd welcome thoughts from others with trade and regulation experience, for the complexity of the subject is such that it is almost impossible for any individual to do the whole subject justice. @MichelleEgan14?

EU rules do not stop innovation in the agriculture sector. The precautionary principle to risk management is applied around the world, just in different sectors. They do however prevent some US food being sold into the UK. (last paras of news.sky.com/story/protests…)
If EU rules were holding back agriculture production so much how come the Netherlands has become the world's second largest exporter of agricultural produce? nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2017/…
UK policy is currently to rush into trade deals without knowing what our post-Brexit economy looks like or how trade deals will affect them. On the positive side we hear Number 10 scepticism on this, and some initiatives to start discussing them. We should play a longer game.

My learned colleague @leemakiyama has a measured take on the UK Huawei decision which should, but probably won't, counter some of the more hysterical opinion on the subject.
@leemakiyama I have always had difficulty with the view of some Brexiteers that the main reason to leave the EU was to be able to follow the US more closely, particularly under this President. We have to find our own path, and it seems to me that this is what the PM has done in this case.
@leemakiyama Those who think the UK disagreeing with the US over Huawei means the end of the special relationship demonstrate both little faith in it and little understanding of history. And I don't see US voters being too impressed if the President starts attacking the UK.

Future relationship as a whole or just the future trade deal? How does this team relate to other negotiations such as with the US? And is Frost to be considered equivalent to Barnier or with whoever leads the trade element of the EU team? Questions...
Answer to one question here - Frost to be the direct counterpart of Barnier. Personally would rather have a more 'political' counterpart, and will be interesting to see who answers questions in Parliament on EU negotiations. The PM only? theguardian.com/politics/2020/…
I don't know how much time Barnier spends in negotiations compared to being out and about making speeches and meeting politicians, but its a lot, and not having a UK counterpart who does this is a problem for us.

Just days away from a #GE2019 which will shape UK for many generations to come!

Some incontrovertible facts:

1/ UK GDP% growth has stalled, at just 0.1% over the 6 months to 30sep19 (so, virtually flat-lining). This is the worst 1/2 year performance since the financial crash.
2/ Three plus years on from the disastrous #EURef, we now KNOW that destabilising Russian influence/cash was a material factor in driving the #Leave Vote. So, #RussiaReport MUST be released BEFORE we vote again in #GE2019.
3/ Russian agents also freely KILL (when directed & funded to do so) on the streets of Britain, so let's not readily 'pooh pooh' their ambition & reach to destabilise both the #UK & #EU.

Amid reports that #UK PM @theresa_may hopes to renegotiate the "backstop" provision on the Northern Ireland border, let's recall that she already made clear what she wants in her letter to #EU leaders before disastrously losing the #Brexit Withdrawal Treaty ratification vote. 1/
"This could be mitigated by changes to the backstop itself," she wrote to @eucopresident & @JunckerEU "Proposals for a way in which the UK could choose to exit the backstop unilaterally were it ever to come into force, or for a hard time limit... 2/
on the duration of the usage of the backstop, have been raised and discussed in Parliament. We have also raised them previously in negotiations." So there are her proposals, i.e. the EU should basically just cave on backstop in face of House of Commons defeat. But but but ... 3/

Is this now the only way through? A fudged future relationship that stops no deal, but keeps open the option (for both the EU and the Brexiteers) of killing Chequers during the transition, so is just about swallowable?
After March 31, 2019, PM A.N. Other (a Brexiteer) then pushes for 🇨🇦 before Dec 31, 2020 (without a border in the Irish Sea). They are, presumably, rebuffed and we’re back where we are now in June 2020 weighing up WTO vs EEA+ (or accepting Chequers+ — ie Jersey)
