The ideal healthcare system would:
1. First & foremost be based on the principles of addressing the social determinants of health - poverty, education, housing etc. This means tackling wealth & health inequality
2. Focus on Public health, disease prevention & health promotion
3. Respect and invest in Primary Care, including community nursing and allied community care services
4. Invest properly in the social care system, which should be free at the point of use, thus reducing poverty rates in old age, & younger generation (who can inherit property)
5. Publicly fund & publicly deliver healthcare. Remove the market & private sector from frontline healthcare delivery. (Marketisation introduces huge transaction costs)
6. Public accountability and oversight of the system. External peer review of clinical care.
7. Recognise that public investment in health promotes economic growth. It keeps population healthy & economically active. It redistributes wealth, stimulating local health economies.
8. Invest in science, research & education. Export ideas, technology & new medicines, globally
9. Understand that austerity kills, because it undermines all of the above.

Unfortunately, it’s clear we’ll never see a system like this under the Tories, because it’s the antithesis of their ideology of reducing the role of the state and promoting marketisation & privatisation
