Somebody at Twitter is on the ball fighting misinformation today: the widely cited statistic about 38% of Americans that all you people are retweeting is misleading.
A PR company did a poll. Polls are misleading. They don't have the exact poll online, but they describe the results here:
prnewswire.com/news-releases/…
It's not about whether dumb Americans think Corona beer causes the corona virus. It's about a name being tainted with bad associations. I mean, most Americans won't buy a beer named "buttsex" either, even while knowing perfectly well that there isn't a relationship between them.
Only 16% said they were confused if there was a relationship. Again, this doesn't mean they think Corona beer causes the virus. Instead, they aren't sure where the name "Corona beer" comes from or where the name "corona virus" comes from.
Indeed, the poll may be causing the confusion. "I didn't think there was any relationship, but now that you ask, I don't know enough about the situation to firmly deny any connection".
This trending thing says nothing about people's intelligence and understanding of the coronavirus. Instead, this trending thing says everything about people's intelligence and their understanding of polls.
Me: <takes the wrong side of everything>
Them: Yea, but you wouldn't take the side of the 38% who think Corona beer causes the coronavirus.
Me: Hold my beer.
