I'm usually as hawkish as @AmbJohnBolton on foreign affairs, but on US signing a deal with Taliban in Afghanistan, I disagree with him, and completely agree with Prez Trump and US Rep Zal Khalilzad @US4AfghanPeace. Below I explain why:
America went to war in Afghanistan when Taliban was hosting Al-Qaeda and Al-Qaeda launched 9/11 terror attacks against the US. US mission in Afghanistan should have been completed after Al-Qaeda was decimated, at most after the killing of its leader Bin Laden in 2011.
But after US initial success, Bush administration decided to fix Afghanistan comprehensively through nation-building and spreading democracy. This was proven impossible in absence of reliable local Afghani partners (most partners proved to be corrupt and manipulative)
With democracy impossible, only US goal left was to make sure leaving Afghanistan would not let it turn back into the terror launchpad it was before 2002. Mind you, unlike Qaeda, ISIS, #Iran militias, Taliban never launched terror attacks outside Afghanistan.
Taliban is notorious on human rights and imposes Islamic Sharia, but by now we agree America can do little to fix such a problem: China, Iran, Cuba... etc are all terrible on human rights, leaving America with only one option: We beat them if they threaten our land or interests
Taliban has conceded by accepting to share power with Kabul government. This gave our troops a good exit strategy, and denied our enemies -- Russia, Iran, Pakistan -- a chance to use Taliban to attack US forces. So guess who's unhappy about US deal with Taliban: #Iran!
Because America has the best military does not mean America should keep its military busy and engaged at all times. On the contrary, our fine military deserves wise leadership. Now is the time for America to sheath its sword in #Afghanistan and stick to #AfghanPeaceDeal.
Our military is still needed, however, to beat back countries form where terror still emanates, such as lawless #Syria, #Iraq and the source of all trouble: #Iran. Killing Soleimani was totally correct, and so is deal with Taliban and withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Hate Trump or love him, on #Iran and #Afghanistan, his moves have been much smarter than those of his predecessors. End --
