It’s World #HandHygiene Day

#CleanHands are key to keep patients & health workers safe, yet:
🔸50% of health care facilities don't have basic hand hygiene facilities at points of care & toilets
🔸3.85 billion people lack a basic hand hygiene service at their health care facility
Stop avoidable infections.

Practice #HandHygiene by using alcohol-based hand sanitizers 🧴 or soap 🧼 and water 🫧

In hospitals, the lack of #HandHygiene can cause:

New WHO report on #AntimicrobialResistance reveals very high levels of resistance in common bacteria frequently causing bloodstream infections in hospitals.

Infection prevention & control is critical to stop the spread and save lives.

Several common infections are becoming increasingly resistant to treatment.

Over 60% of the bacteria causing gonorrhoea, a common sexually-transmitted infection, have been reported as resistant to one of the main antibiotics used to treat it.

The bacteria that causes most urinary tract infections - E. coli - is over 20% resistant to the main antibiotics used to treat UTIs.

These painful infections then become harder to treat.

As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death.

⚠ In 2019, nearly 5 million human deaths worldwide were associated with bacterial #AntimicrobialResistance (AMR) and 1.27 million human deaths were directly attributable to it.

2/ In 2019 alone 5m deaths were connected to #AntimicrobialResistance (#AMR), according to a recent @TheLancet report. The deadly, drug-resistant infections behind these deaths come about because of the over- and misuse of antimicrobials, which makes bacteria resistant to them

New evidence now shows that in 2019 an estimated 1.27 million deaths were directly attributable to #AntimicrobialResistance and 4.95 million deaths were associated with it: study from @IHME_UW
The new study now clearly demonstrates the existential threat that #AntimicrobialResistance poses to global health and modern medicine.
Lack of robust global data and evidence of the impact of drug-resistance has been a critical knowledge gap and has hampered efforts to advocate for policies and practices to control #AntimicrobialResistance.

➡️Usugu wa antibiotiki hutokea pale bakteria wanapotengeneza usugu dhidi ya aina flani ya dawa.

Matumizi holela ya dawa aina ya antibiotiki huchangia usugu wa dawa kutokea.

Bakteria wanapopata usugu husababisha

The 2021 AMR Preparedness Index is an excellent effort to look at what is 1 of our most pressing public health issues as some countries emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic: #AntimicrobialResistance

There are important findings for Canadians and their leaders:
1. We ain't so good!
2. We are behind the UK, US, France, Germany, India and Japan on a national strategy.
"Governments must make bolder financial investments ...
... should develop more ambitious National Action Plans and provide sufficient funding to achieve goals ... lean into AMR initiatives now"
3. We are kinda pathetic on governments' commitments to foster and support AMR innovation.
Govts "should implement pull incentive programs within the next 3 years ...
increase investments in AMR innovations for surveillance and diagnostics ...
ensure pricing reflects full value"
