In light of the Boston police Union leader child abuse, this is very plausible, even probable. I have 2x, on behalf of someone else, reported, via Title IX - the woman or gay man was not feeling safe enuf to report. Yes, there is blowback when one reports. But we can’t be silent.
I am a mandated reporter as a #pediatrician. I *must* report for my patients or face legal consequences. Am same for staff, students, trainees. But in #EmergencyMedicine who do I call if a child may be unsafe at home? Sometimes, cops. Are cops safe?

boston.com/news/local-new…
I have seen #mentalhealth and entire life paths destroyed by abusers preying on children like: This happened to too many people I know. I have seen institutions intimidate, mislabel, bury stories of the victims. (Some predators wait until 18th birthday.)

nytimes.com/2017/08/07/nyr…
“Not all men” or “Not all faculty” or “Not all cops”?

Too many are silent, complicit. You may not abuse but you are part of a silencing culture of intimidation of victims if you choose not to know, look away, question if a child’s story true.

amny.com/news/why-i-did…
I have seen TOO much as a practicing #pediatrics #emergencyroom doctor in my 15 years of clinical practice. I have heard too much from peers & staff.
By: The uncle. The coach. The scout leader. Etc.

A culture of #transparency & #accountability needed

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20118864/
It makes EVERYONE safer when we #believewomen #believesurvivors (not all victims are women)
Like #nashvillebombing

Many public terror or mass violence acts are by those with a history of domestic violence, animal abuse, elder abuse, abuse/killing of a mother or female figure.
What has complicated things is openly gay or LGBTQ man or any gender also get targeted.

Women can be bullies to maintain social order, in fact often serve in HR/compliance functions on behalf of institutions.

HR protects companies, not victims.

newsweek.com/how-human-reso…
“Relational bullying” is how to isolate, humiliate, shame.

To protect institution, HR seeks to get employee student to leave, not report, not file a lawsuit, and be so psychologically distressed that is “not credible” as a reporter.
“Crazy” to negate.

hbr.org/amp/2018/07/ho…
Since I have become outspoken online - on addressing faculty #bullying of students/trainees: online harassment by anonymous accounts, male psychologists, male faculty
+ a smear campaign
What “allegation”?

I say: “verify” facts
Gossip suppresses victims

thehill.com/opinion/civil-…
We NEED #transparency, #accountability, reporting with due process. Vigilante activism is not due process.

Gossiping about the alleged predator does NOT protect the next person in the elevator with a predator, nor removes from job/environment, nor enforces limits.
Sadly, as much as I am pro-reporting, from assault to medical errors, this: The likely abusing person will
-claim victim
-file defamation
-make the reporting victim’s life so hellish that it silences, shames
-again ruins her life/sanity

But we let them

motherjones.com/crime-justice/…
Even the #WomenInMedicine created @TIMESUPHC has been found to do this: advise victims it is “not worth it” to report.

Isn’t the role of #advocacy organizations to remove barriers & protect against blowback? Who can be trusted to stand up to bullies?

hollywoodreporter.com/amp/news/times…
Of course there is complexity but too often

the “activist”’start
becomes a career path

Abusers hold career hostage w/threats: “That’s a lot of work you did.. shame to lose it.”

Across the board, the most senior (women) become apologists, as I have also criticized Dr. Birx.
This has not been discussed, but you canNOT make a case that Dr. Birx was creating a safe space for reporting or addressing sexual assault it harassment for direct reports given what other behaviors she explained away. Various forms of harm is harm.

Compare wording to dismiss.
“Safe space” is not about gender is the point I am trying to make

Institutions hire women in HR & #communication to “soften” their image, TO SUPPRESS reporting

Safe space = commitment to #transparency, fairness, due process, unbiased evaluation per clear standards.
I engage like this online
Others delete tweets after issuing a “call out” *to* me
-> “tally” my *responses* as “harassment”
=manipulation

It had been a “plandemic” style video w/ shaking images impossible to read = a smear campaign vs me

Read my actual words/tweets
#MedTwitter
#SciComm like @JAMA_current is under fire statnews.com/2021/04/06/pod…

#MedBikini was retracted.

I am observing exactly the same in #science #communication as is documented across wrong use of #professionalism

NO standards
Lacking ethics per law & bioethics
Abusive #data access
What is purpose of “AbolishThePolice”?

Save Black & brown lives

What is purpose of #medicine & #healthcare?

First do no harm
Save lives

Who is dying?
Of #COVID19 + institutional racism?
Frontline
Elderly
Minority

You cannot criticize policing and not healthcare policing
Tragedy of Dr. Lorna Breen
= what happens when a woman #physician in #leadership, regardless of race, takes it upon herself

to compensate for #system harms, cares too much, while gaslighted by non-clinical administrators #MedTwitter
#WomenInMedicine

nytimes.com/2019/06/08/opi…
Believe women clinicians, law enforcement, students

Those AT FRONTLINE
on abuse & harm

Universities and hospitals are chasing other incentives
Wooing politicians
Violating policies

I do speak up whether I get a chance
But this can’t be a few people
#MedTwitter
When it was my own mother in hospital, last hours of my mom’s life, told “the rules are the rules”

I was told “leave & we will call you when she is expired”
Or: “disconnect now”

Yet Pence toured maskless?
Celebrity doctors partying?
What rules?

Who is #MedTwitter trusting?
Thanks to #Socialmedia #activism of #DrSusanMoore, this schema from @CoCoQC

I understood what was going on at my mother’s bedside
how I HAD to #communicate
with #hospital
holding hostage
access to my mom
pull plug “or leave”

to protect her
not be criminalized myself
as a Muslim
Use of police vs minorities
by ppl
NOT following standards:

-ICE vs Mexican restaurant w/ #MaskUp #COVID19 #safety
-Manhattan 👩🏼exec asked to leash dog vs black man
-@Sarah_Mojarad of @USC threatening a Muslim Arab woman doc/resident’s visa
(like vs #DrSusanMoore)

#MedTwitter
The last example of @USC is an *institution* problem
Like:
Mayo & Pence
#DrSusanMoore “intimidating”

hire #communication as “#SciComm

but repeated actions
= targeting #LGBTQ, #BIPOC
#BlackintheIvory
+
Patient #data misuse

#BLM
#MedTwitter
Student view:
dailytrojan.com/2020/08/12/cal…
#DrSusanMoore taught me what to expect when my mother became >500,000 #COVID19 deaths

Offer” Model minority” #communication while my mother was dying

Why, #MedTwitter #NurseTwitter are we letting administrators & non-clinicians divide us?
@EricTopol

medscape.com/viewarticle/92…
But please follow the 💰 💰💰

Who pays salary of a communicator?

What is the PATTERN of actions of the employer/institution or their paid communicator?

Who is creating speciality “lists” to collect your #data?

Are #safety activists targeted?

#Healthcare already exploits now:
I started this 🧵 with
importance of speaking up
& reporting

I gave multiple examples
of online silencing
of clinicians
who are speaking up
about safety or harassment

the lesson of Cassandra:
she was right
#Believewomen (and men)
AT FRONTLINE

#MedTwitter #NurseTwitter #MedEd
NOT literal or figurative “police” who will either keep us safe

Believe me as a Muslim Pakistani-American woman I know
men with guns are usually not there to protect me,
not anywhere in the world
#Safety does NOT exist for me anywhere

not willing to be a token “WOC” pawn either
Why, #MedTwitter & #NurseTwitter, do you think YOU are safe?
Why willing to be silenced?
Why do you silence/shame peers?

#COVID19 deaths:
>500,000 Americans
>3,600 #HCW (dying younger)

#Pandemic re-rising

#Healthcare
Where is #health
Where is #care?

I would say that society is at fault. The government was not behind Jenny McCarthy, Oprah, Dr. Oz, etc.

What the government DID do wrong: “#security” & espionage via vaccines Frankenstein monster unleashed on Muslims

If the US government does do things like this it’s not a “#conspiracy

If Prius-driving Whole Foods-consuming suburbanites would STOP #misinformation #disinformation to #trauma ridden #refugee populations

the jobs of minority & Muslim doctors would not be so hard

This is why I am outspoken when #MedEd or #Education faculty and/or administration and/or HR falsely label a POC, BIPOC, WOC.

People end up dead.

Verify identity and do not spread rumors, innuendo, threats. Refer cases to appropriate authorities or #ethics committees.
Am learning about social network analysis.

As an American Muslim I have always been looked at with suspicion or been under surveillance.

Once I looked at how closely connected some faculty or healthcare ppl are to QAnon posts (or believe it selves) 😱

nytimes.com/2021/01/04/us/…
During the Trump administration, well before the #CapitolAttack, many minorities were experiencing increasing workplace #harassment & #bullying, especially for simply speaking (up). Just seeking accurate data for patients can = “threat” #MedTwitter

Had a fun time talking about #leadership in #STEM (at any stage of career), #BlackExcellence #WomenInSTEM #DEI #DiversityandInclusion to a range of students and faculty at @tennesseetech. Thanks for the invitation @JosephCSlater. Look forward to building further on this.
Talked about ways to take on community level leadership roles to develop skills in acquiring funding, managing a budget, team building, managing people, executing.

Know what you are good at and balance the rest with your team. Don’t try to be it all.
Particularly on #Twitter, being overt about terms like #bias or #BLM or #racism can result in blowback. That does not mean what you said was wrong rather others may have insecurity or have work to do. Manage your energy as an advocate. Avoid burnout.

Addressing #stigma: If you are my friend or colleague, regardless of gender, you get to know my ovaries whether you want to or not. I’m a woman with #endometriosis & #fibroid #menstrualhealth pain. Instead of seeming “flaky” I will tell you my #womenshealth reason I must cancel.
This is also a generational thing. Boomers and some GenX were “I am as tough as a guy... ovaries.. what ovaries?”

Me: “I have ovaries. They are complicated suckers. We’ll have to work around them.”

One of the things that made me 🥰is when a MAN reached out to me, because I tweet on this, for his female significant other to ask if I had resources to help her

If you hear of me being “anti-woman” I am anti-#professionalism (women) who suppress open uncomfortable communication

I fired several guns recently, at a gun range. Many guns have safeties too. I don't know how things work for the police in terms of the gun safety and such, but the actual muscle memory and actions needed to use a taser versus a gun are quite different.
I fired those guns for a few reasons
1-when I get targeted (#cyberstalking) by potentially QAnon affiliated "militia" types, I am not going to show fear
2-maybe if they see a Muslim firing machine guns they'll support gun control. 🤣
3-to tweet this. 😁 =having street cred
Some guns I fired:

Been busy unsubscribing from emails & deleting hundreds of emails at a time.

The loss of my mail icon on my iPhone (still have not found it but have a new way to access it) has made me realize (since I was forgetting to check my mail without the visual cue) the overwhelm in it.
I am really good at skimming a lot of stuff and going right to the thing of use. I'd been tolerating SO much spam and with the various moves, not everything is quite as relevant. Being a journalist personality, I still remain curious - what is the @nypl doing, for instance?
With #pandemic, everything is virtual and accessible without being physically present in #NYC. I *might* "go" and wanted to have the option or the easy access so had not thought to unsubscribe. But wow is my inbox CROWDED.

Perhaps I will get under 100,000 unread emails soon.
