I joined Tendermint (the company) three years ago, on June 17th, 2019. I started as a frontend engineer and progressed to building my own product (Ignite), leading an engineering team on a mission to improve the developer experience of @cosmos. We've succeeded. Here's a retro.
It all started with us winning first place in the Paris Blockchain Week hackathon in 2019. Against all odds, we've managed to build an SDK module and do a fantastic demo of it.
Shortly after I emailed @zcpeng, had a quick call, talked with @billyrennekamp, and got hired. I've never worked in a distributed company before and this was an incredible opportunity for me. Can't express how grateful I am to both of them 🙏

Recently, @AntonioMJuliano did an interview with @BanklessHQ to explain @dYdX's decision to move to a Cosmos app chain. ⚛️

In this thread, we will cover all major points that pushed the team to take this decision 🧵

Here's our summary from this insightful interview 👇
@AntonioMJuliano @BanklessHQ @dYdX 📌 Introduction

@dYdX is a very popular and successful derivative exchange which was first built on Ethereum Mainnet, then moved to Starkware, an Ethereum L2.

Last week, the team announced they will create their own #Cosmos app chain for the V4.

@AntonioMJuliano @BanklessHQ @dYdX This decision has been a great source of promotion for the Cosmos ecosystem & the app chain world, making it a solid challenger to the L2 vision.

Seeing that, we can definitely wonder:
Is the future going to be an app chain world or a L2 world?

With @AlterDapp announcing June 29th as the beta launch date for their "Stake-to-Access" feature I wanted to dive into what this means and how it will benefit $ALTER, $SCRT and the users in the #Cosmos ecosystem and beyond.

@AlterDapp 2/🧵

This feature will allow any user who has at least 10 $SCRT staked the ability to use $ALTER’s private messaging platform FREE of charge 🤯

This feature will apply to ALL validators on @SecretNetwork and is NOT limited to just @Alterdapp's validator.
@AlterDapp @SecretNetwork 3/🧵

The decision by @Alterdapp to include ALL validators in their Stake-to-Access program shows their desire to promote a more decentralized @SecretNetwork while simultaneously helping attract new users to the $ALTER platform and ultimately the $SCRT & #Cosmos ecosystems.

I'm oriented for a No, but I wait to see a deeper discussion and confrontation. The long timeframe of #Cosmos governance allows thoughtful decisions.

My main concern is the we have already @quicksilverzone that will likely leverage ICS

So why spend 150K $ATOM more

#Cosmos Hub and community did a lot for this ecosystem. I would like to see the main builders sharing that value back to the Hub, now that they can.

Asking an high amount of funds to launch something that is already coming by a free contribution, doesn't seems wise.
@ChorusOne (Quicksilver team) that is also a long term contributors of #Cosmos didn't asked for any funds from the community pool and yet is considering to apply for #Interchain Security and share value back with $ATOM

If #Cosmos was a European football league, it's safe to say it just had its biggest transfer season ever

A recap of the confirmed migrations and why it matters 🧵
The football league analogy is quite appropriate because similar to the major clubs with players, established blockchains often have to extend massive financial offers to attract the top projects
Cosmos biggest catch, however, will run its own app-chain:

Ethereum's most successful L2 app @dydx is leaving the StarkEx roll-up to launch on Cosmos

Staking your #cosmos ecosystem coins?

Not sure which validator to delegate to?

Let’s dive into what factors to consider.

🧵: 1/x
Here's quick list of factors:

• Uptime
• Infrastructure
• Use of commission
• Governance alignment
• Decentralization (rank)
• Community involvement

You'd expect every validator to always be up and running, but many aren't.

If a validator is down for too long, they can be jailed, which means no staking rewards.

Aim for a validator with 99%+ uptime (or whatever percent is top-tier for the chain).

With the recent announcement of @dYdX joining the #cosmos, it is clear that much of CT is still confused on the differences between the Cosmos Ecosystem, the @cosmoshub, $ATOM, IBC, and the Cosmos SDK.

🧵: Let us clarify for those who may be new. 1/x
@dYdX @cosmoshub 2/x With its mainnet launch of the Cosmos HUB in early 2019, the @jaekwon and @buchmanster creation started the beginning of what would be known as the internet of blockchains (a “big bang” if you will).
3/x The Cosmos HUB is an individual blockchain that aims to play a vital role in the entire Cosmos ecosystem. The Cosmos Ecosystem (not the HUB) is the summation of all the individual blockchains which just so happens to include the Cosmos HUB. There are around 50 chains atm

Yesterday @dYdX announced their decision to spin up their own chain using the Cosmos SDK, which immediately made the #Cosmos hashtag trending on Twitter everywhere

In this thread, I cover what is DyDx, their decision and the massive impact for both Cosmos & Ethereum roll-ups 🧵
@dYdX dYdX is a decentralised exchange for perpetual contracts

A perpetual contract is a special type of futures contract, which itself is an agreement to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price at a specified time in the future
@dYdX With futures, the trades are not ‘settled’ instantly ; Instead the two counter-parties trade a contract that defines the settlement at a future date

But unlike regular futures, perps don't have an expiry date and trader can hold a position for as long as they like

0/ Polygon #Avail is a chain-agnostic, modular data availability blockchain built by @0xPolygon. Like @CelestiaOrg, it aims to provide rollups & L1s with a highly scalable DA & consensus layer ✨

A 🧵 on how #Polygon's specialized DA layer works & compares to Celestia (0/34) 👇 Image
@0xPolygon @CelestiaOrg 1/ @0xPolygon has been stealth building Avail since 2020 & has announced the testnet for Q2 2022 in April:

@0xPolygon @CelestiaOrg 2/ Unlike @CelestiaOrg, Polygon #Avail is not built on the #Cosmos SDK and not using Tendermint BFT. However, Avail is also a PoS network, using a nominated Proof of Stake consensus algorithm

0/ Rollups are a key technology in blockchain scaling, even beyond $ETH. #Cevmos for example enables the deployment of EVM rollups on top of a @EvmosOrg-based rollup leveraging @CelestiaOrg's modular data availability layer

Short 🧵 on the Cevmos stack & its purpose (0/11) ⚛️👇
@EvmosOrg @CelestiaOrg 1/ #Cevmos (short for Celestia/EVMos/CosmOS) is a modular stack for building EVM-based rollups that use #Celestia as a DA & consensus layer. The Cevmos stack will center around an optimized settlement chain for rollups, based on #Evmos
@EvmosOrg @CelestiaOrg 2/ What is Celestia?

#Celestia is a modular consensus & data availability layer built on the Cosmos SDK that aims to enable anyone to easily deploy decentralized blockchains without the overhead of bootstrapping a new consensus network

Market is down, emotion takes over and some of us are experiencing their first bear market, it’s tough.

@cobie often says that crypto is a survival game, you have to figure out what can kill you.

Indeed, understand what can knock you out of this game.👇
@cobie What can kill you?

👉 Leaving your money on an exchange/entity that went bankrupt/stole your funds (Mt. Gox)

👉Losing the private key/seed of your cold wallet

👉Leaving you funds on a specific blockchain/protocol that crashed (Terra)

👉Having a poor risk management
@cobie To survive, @ledgerstatus used a great analogy called the "Horcrux method", which is a Harry Potter reference.

To survive, you just have to split your soul into many different places. Same for your money: spread across exchanges, custody types & blockchains to survive

#Terra's meltdown led many native protocols to look outward to the #Cosmos & realise the benefits of joining an ecosystem of fully interoperable & scalable app-chains

One such project is @mars_protocol and in today’s thread I’m running it through the usual quality checklist 🧵
@mars_protocol If you're unfamiliar with my investment framework, you may want to have a look at this thread first
@mars_protocol The first criteria is the total addressable market (TAM) which represents the revenue opportunity available to the protocol

Mars is a lending & borrowing (also called credit or money-market) protocol

On Ethereum, the top 10 actors in the category capture a TVL close to $15 bn

📚 Weekly news: June 6-12

What happened on the Cosmos ecosystem this week?
Well, this week was a bit turbulent, not only for Cosmos but also for the whole crypto market. 🥲

Let's see what happened, stay up to date by reading this thread Cosmonauts 👇 ⚛️

1/ Osmosis got exploited

A bug on Osmosis liquidity pools happened right after the v9 nitrogen upgrade. If you added liquidity to a pool and then remove it, your money grew by 50% instantly.

Fortunately, validators worked with the core team to halt the chain and protect it.
The estimated loss is ≈$5M, the team is in contact with majors exploiters to get the funds back & will use the developer treasury to backstop the unrecovered funds.

This event demonstrated the power of a sovereign chain when everyone collaborates together to handle a crisis.

0/ One of the upcoming L1s I'm most excited about is @CelestiaOrg, a modular, chain-agnostic data availability & consensus layer that provides a highly scalable & decentralized DA solution to rollups & app-specific L1 chains✨

A mega-🧵 on why you should pay attention (0/39)👀👇
@CelestiaOrg 1/ While most blockchain ecosystems agree that the future is multi-chain, the way they envision a multi-chain world can differ heavily. Approaches that have started to gain traction over the past few months are #Ethereum (rollups), #Polkadot (parachains) & #Cosmos (zones)
@CelestiaOrg 2/ So, according to its rollup-centric roadmap, #Ethereum envisions the future to evolve around rollup-based L2 solutions. But unfortunately, rollups tend to be rather expensive to operate/use & are less flexible than L1 chains (at least pre EIP-4844 / $ETH 2.0)

Last month we demo'd at @idworkshop to show a non-custodial wallet, that can be recovered, where users can stake, delegate AND hold a #VerifiableCredential

Whilst we're expanding this we’ve #OpenSourced the repo...

To build we forked the @lum_network wallet, an existing #Cosmos project.

We used this to test new identity/ledger functionality on our wallet
By adding a new feature to an already great project, we’ve been able to speed up our journey to get a #VerifiableCredential in a web-based wallet.

Now users can perform standard #DeFi activities, like staking and voting, in the same place they hold a credential

Day 5 of our #OpenSource-athon, with 5 useful APIs for @cosmos builders

As #Cosmonauts know the @cosmossdk offers APIs for built-in modules using gRPC, REST & Tendermint RPC however we noticed a few that it can't provide, so we built them...

This collection of custom APIs can be deployed as a @Cloudflare Worker or compatible serverless platforms
1. 🧮 Total Supply

#Crypto tracking websites such as @CoinMarketCap and @coingecko require an #API endpoint for reporting the total supply of tokens in the main/primary token denomination.

Osmosis is the major DEX on #Cosmos & aims to compete with the biggest Centralized Exchanges in the world.

It's time for us to share their vision and see how bright the future of @osmosiszone is.

This thread is based on a wonderful interview by @laurashin with @sunnya97. 🧵👇
@osmosiszone @laurashin @sunnya97 📌 Point 1: What's the Cosmos vision?

Cosmos is an ecosystem of different application specific blockchains that are all interoperable with each other.

They are three different generations of blockchain, let's make an analogy with political economy 👇
@osmosiszone @laurashin @sunnya97 1st generation: Kingdoms & villages

1st generation blockchains are all very sovereign with just one purpose, think about Bitcoin for example. The big issue is that those 1st generation blockchains don't speak/interoperate with each other.

The $LUNA crash was particularly hard on #LUNAtics because many had most of their net worth on #Terra

It was also felt across the #Cosmos because $UST was a base pair on Osmosis, Sifchain & Crescent pools

A quick primer on Modern Portfolio Theory in that context 🧵
That thread was actually inspired by that honest & candid post by @larry0x, which I then saw echoed by many other smart people in the Terra community
@larry0x Modern portfolio theory (MPT) is a theory on how investors can construct portfolios to maximise expected return based on a given level of market risk

It involves several useful concepts which I'll do my best to explain here without using the underlying mathematical model

1) The Curious Cosmonaut Research team recently published an overview of all #IBC Chains. The article came out to 131 Tweets which we backed up into many (~75) transactions on the HUB, but why? #cosmsos #atom #osmosis #evmos #sifchain #stargaze #juno #sifchain #likecoin #akash
2) Medium can be modified and or censored. Twitter one day may be modified and or censored. The #Cosmos HUB, we believe, is one of the most resilent #blockchains in the entire industry.
3) By moving the content onto the HUB, we believe it will be permanent, immutable, censorship-resistant, recoverable, accessible anywhere, and potentially more.

2) #Cosmos has been having rapid growth over the last couple of years. To give a little context Inter‐Blockchain Communication protocol (#IBC) was only approved on March 29th, 2021 from governance proposal #41.
3) According to a report by Electric Capital Cosmos had a 70% growth in developers in the #Cosmos ecosystem in 2021. This will only continue to grow as Cosmos technology improves and more tools come such as EVM-based chains.

1) Curious Cosmonaut Research — Ethos
Curious Cosmonaut Research plans to become a platform that will decentralize Cosmos Research. It will aim to create a model similar to Seeking Alpha where content creators can get paid for writing articles. #cosmos #atom #IBCGang
2) Funds raised will be staked or used to provide liquidity on DEXs to create income to fund the platform in addition to offering NFTs and other rewards as incentives for content creators with time.
3) Instead of focusing on a particular individual, we plan for the content creators to represent the platform. Content creators can write articles and submit them for review to be published under their name or the Curious Comsonaut Research name depending on their preferences.
