This Halloween I look back to the Halloween of 1780 and the tragic tale of the HMS Ontario, which departed from Fort Niagara this day 239 years ago on route to Oswego, with 130 or more souls on board and loaded with a payroll of army gold. #Buffalo #WNY #History #Halloween
This is the height of the Revolutionary War, almost exactly one year before Cornwallis is defeated at Yorktown in October of 1781.
The HMS Ontario, at 80 feet long and with 22-guns, is the largest and most powerful warship on Lake Ontario (or any of the Great Lakes).

Studying history makes you look at the places that you drive by everyday in a different light. For instance, below is Read's “Home Town Dry Cleaners” just past Harris Hill on Main Street in Clarence. #Buffalo #History
This building was once the Asa Harris Tavern (built in 1807). It sheltered wounded soldiers & citizens fleeing a burning Buffalo in 1813. Buffalo's newspaper also took up shop here, as well as the County Clerk. It acted as the nerve center of the disrupted Buffalo population.
The story of Col. Totman is also connected to this venerable building. Col. Totman was killed in 1813 at Riley and Main (just north of where the Anchor Bar is now). His body was taken to the Harris Hill Tavern, as described by William Hodge (who was a young boy at the time).

Fun Fact: Jim Thorpe trained with Pop Warner for the 1912 Olympics on the horse track at Dygert Farm on Elk Street in Springville (it was also the site of the @ErieCountyFair in 1866 and 1867). The track is still there. #Buffalo #BuffaloHistory #WNY
@ErieCountyFair Dygert Farm is right down the street from where Pop Warner lived.
@ErieCountyFair Jim Thorpe broke the Olympic metal record wearing shoes he took from a garbage can after someone hid the ones that he had brought with him.

Permit me to give some good reasons to eliminate New York's inherently corrupt electoral fusion system, Congresswoman. /1
A decade ago, the so-called Independence Party used a local #Buffalo rumormonger to spread wild lies and rumors about candidates who were hostile to the IP, and to promote IP-endorsed candidates. /2
The Independence Party is barely a properly constituted party, and is not remotely "independent". It is, at least here in WNY, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Republican Party, and helps GOP candidates through voter confusion. / 3

Congrats to Joe McGreevy, #Clarence HS teacher, on the publication of his article on Asa Ransom's Tavern, "A Tavern Within the Trees," in the Winter 2019 Issue of @WNYHeritage… @TheClarenceBee
Asa Ransom's Tavern:
- Built in 1799 (oldest residential structure in #WNY)
- Joseph Ellicott used as Holland Land Company Office
- Identified on Morris Purchase Map of 1801
- Mentioned in law creating #Buffalo in 1810
- Sheltered refugees fleeing the burning of Buffalo in 1813
Also, Theodosia Alston (Aaron Burr's daughter) stopped at Ransom's Tavern in 1801 on route to the first recorded honeymoon at #NiagaraFalls as noted by Joseph Ellicott. #Buffalo #BuffaloHistory

Hands down one of the toughest guys in #Buffalo History: Dr. Cyrenius Chapin. He captured British ships in a daring night raid, manned a cannon in the middle of Niagara Street in the face of British invasion, and made a bold escape from captivity. #BuffaloHistory #CitizenSoldier
"When the British attacked Buffalo in December, 1813, Col. Chapin made a daring stand at Black Rock and defended the place till he had only five men left. He then retreated to Buffalo, where he found a dismounted six-pounder cannon."

1/ Here's a thread for the Thursday before Election Day - just 5 days to go. Today, I'll stop by @BradRiter's @TrendingBuffalo to record a somewhat traditional Election-eve podcast.
2/ A lot can happen in 5 days, but [shrug emoji] we go with what we have. Here's what we have right now in #WNY and #Buffalo.
3/ #NY27: no-brainer. The INcumbent is INdicted, IN hiding, INcorrigible, INtolerable, and IN custody. A vote for @Nate_McMurray is a vote for honor, responsive representation, & rule of law. Nate works hard, & will do the district proud; even when you may disagree. He'll listen.
