A few videos from last night’s protests in Portland that I didn’t have time to post in my original thread.

Don’t think anyone was arrested in this clip, just shoved around.

On December 23, 2019, Breonna Taylor tweeted about how happy she felt about paying off her debt. She would start 2020 debt-free, and that accomplishment "makes my whole heart smile."

Today I cannot read that without my heart breaking.

[thread] 👇🏾
Look at her Twitter handle, "Pretty N Paidd."

She should be alive today, tweeting about paying off debt, telling stories about budgeting and saving, on Zoom calls with the debt-free community, launching the Pretty N Paid Podcast.

She should be here with us today. /2

"No justice, no peace." is not merely a protest chant; it's a statement of fact.

When authorities fail to respect fundamental rights, people are naturally outraged.

If authorities want quiet streets, punish police who shoot people in their sleep.

#JusticeForBreonnaTaylor
In the US, the police approach to black people is: "shoot first, because the authorities won't ask any questions later".

Police can literally get away with murder.

Nothing is going to improve until that changes fundamentally.

Here's how we get there: bit.ly/3049Zud
Still demanding justice for #BreonnaTaylor...

...and the complete overhaul of US policing.

Today’s indictment doesn’t do nearly enough to hold the officers accountable for Breonna Taylor’s killing—and it doesn’t come close to providing her family with the justice they deserve.

This indictment is proof that we need to immediately pass the #JusticeInPolicingAct.
I know so many of us are angry & heartbroken over this. Black lives *do* matter.

We must use our power at the ballot box, because the Attorney General who declared today that the shooting of Breonna Taylor was a justified use of deadly force derives his power FROM VOTERS.
If we organize—if we harness our fury to stay energized—we CAN keep individuals out of power who turn a blind eye to violent acts of police misconduct.

#JusticeForBreonnaTaylor. Now.

"It took sustained protests across the nation, along with relentless advocacy from her family, to begin the process to hold her killers accountable...today, not 1 of the 3 officers involved has been charged for the killing of Ms. Taylor."

Today's announcement did not achieve #JusticeForBreonnaTaylor and the public deserves to know how this decision was reached.
In July, @NAACP_LDF filed a complaint against the City of Louisville for its military-style force. With protesters already taking to the streets tonight, we call for restraint as the night unfolds.

Today’s announcement in the Breonna Taylor case was horrifying. But not surprising.

It reveals a deeply-ingrained system that undervalues, ignores, and denies justice to Black women.
Black women, who make up just 13% of all women in this country, make up 20% of the women shot and killed by police.

And too often, their names don’t even make the news cycle.
Black women face often insurmountable barriers to accessing reproductive services such as birth control, abortion care, and prenatal care.

At least five of the Louisville, Kentucky, cops involved in the “no knock” search warrant that ended with Breonna Taylor’s death were involved in another botched drug raid in 2018. These cops need to be arrested. Now. #JusticeForBreonnaTaylor thedailybeast.com/five-louisvill…
"Four cops who burst into [Breonna] Taylor’s apartment in March, and a fifth who requested the controversial search warrant, rammed the front door of Mario Daugherty’s home, firing flash bangs and shouting at his family to come outside, according to body-cam footage."
"The search warrant claimed marijuana was being grown and sold from the house, but the case was later dropped. Daughtery’s 14-year-old daughter thought she was being robbed and ran out into an alley where she was arrested by officers with guns drawn."

Last night, as protesters were pushed by police up Stark away from the East Precinct station, they encountered a woman shouting insults from her porch. She was wearing a Nazi uniform, and had a Nazi flag in her window. Tonight they confronted her again, tagging 'Nazi Lives Here'
She came out again to shout at the protesters, saying "I never said I was a Nazi", they respond "You wore a swastika!"
The Nazi flag is now gone from her window, but the tag on her house remains.
(image from @garbagefilth 's video.)
Dressing like this or displaying the Nazi flag in Germany, the place where Nazism originated, is illegal and would result in her arrest.
In Portland, however, it is permitted.

“Ramy” is the first Muslim American sitcom to score an Emmy nomination. And this year marks a record number of Black actors nominated, with 26 nominees being actors of color. Love seeing this progression in Hollywood!

George’s name was on everyone’s lips. Ahmaud’s story was on every timeline. Not just the right or left- but the middle. But is it just me or is it, unless Black, an Activist or a Racist- Most of the middle have little clue who #BreonnaTaylor is. /1
The combined factors of MisogyNoir mixed with the sick need for sensationalism mean that not being a man & not having footage of her death has led to invisibility. We keep saying her name but they keep NOT knowing her & not caring. THAT’S why her killers are still free! /2 Image
So we need to make them care. We need to stop adding her as a PostScript- it’s a clever way to get her name out there but people are lazy & apathetic so most aren’t going to do the work of looking her up. So let’s do the work for them, or rather let’s do the work for Breonna! /3 Image

Hundreds of people are out in the suburbs today in Louisville, bringing their demands for #JusticeForBreonnaTaylor to people who have mostly seen it on TV. They don’t know where they’re going—just that they’re following @TamikaDMallory and there’s a chance they might be arrested

I’m at the @untilfreedom training ahead of a planned action today, meant to urge Louisville to fire and arrest the police officers who fatally shot Breonna Taylor.

Details on what and when the action is are sparse, so far, for security reasons.
Tamika Palmer, Breonna’s mother, is here.

The training started with a standing ovation for her.
The organizers of this action are not local.

One said about half the people who registered for the action are from Louisville, and the other half are people who traveled in. I spoke with one group that came in from New York.

There are about 100 people here.
