It’s time to start a #WWDC Wishlist Mega Thread. Here we go, will keep adding things until the event.
1. iOS 16: Add new languages in Apple Translate. I can hope for Indian languages, especially Hindi, but I think they have a long list before reaching there.
2. Wider rollout for Apple Pay, hopefully we get it in India as well. Indian market is quickly shifting towards Tap to Pay, and the government is encouraging digital payments more than any other country. Apple Pay would be a great addition.

In Jan. 1997 I was 15 and obsessed with computers. My family happened to be in San Francisco and we drove by Moscone Center where I saw banners proclaiming that MacWorld Expo was happening. The pic is me around that time 🙂

A short thread ⬇️

#RetroComputing #Apple #Mac #macOS
I made a sign on a pizza box reading "SPARE MACWORLD PASS?" I only stood outside for ~10 minutes before a nice woman in a business suit gave me her pass and said "tell anyone who questions you that I'm your mom!" I went in and spent a joyful day exploring the exhibit hall.
1997 was a tumultuous time in @apple's history and for the #Mac / #macOS platform, as evidenced by San Francisco being blanketed in militaristic / revolutionary posters defending the small (but feisty!) ecosystem of Mac clones

In T3 2021, #ESETtelemetry saw a decline in all detections of monitored #macOS threats by 5.9%, compared to T2. The biggest drop was seen towards the end of December 2021, probably attributed to various festivities around the world. 🎅🕎 #ESETresearch 1/4
The decline was visible in nearly all monitored categories – Potentially Unwanted Applications (-22.5%), Adware (-10.6%) and trojans (-6.2%). Only Potentially Unsafe Applications saw a negligible uptick in T3. 2/4
While overall lower detection numbers could be seen as something positive, more than 36% of all macOS threats ESET detected in T3 were trojans and overall macOS Trojan detections rose by 126% from 2020 to 2021. 3/4

I wanted to add a meme to the blogpost but apparently you simply can't do that...
Apparently @_r3ggi found very similar issues in parallel to my findings, it's interesting to see the different approaches to TCC bypass bughunting.

Incredibly happy that our @RoboStack paper has been accepted to the @ieeeras Robotics & Automation Magazine 🥳. @RoboStack brings together #ROS @rosorg with @condaforge and @ProjectJupyter. Preprint: Find out some key benefits in this 🧵: 1/n
You can now easily use ROS (both ROS1 #Noetic and ROS2 #Galactic) on a wide range of platforms: @linuxfoundation (not just a specific Ubuntu, any Linux!), @Apple #MacOS and @Microsoft @Windows - even on ARM processors including the new M1 (work still in progress, though). 2/n
Thanks to the tight coupling to @condaforge, this enables you to (very easily) install ROS side-by-side with thousands of scientific libraries, including recent #computervision and #machinelearning ones (think @TensorFlow, @opencvlibrary, @PyTorch and more). 3/n

7 types of advanced search operators. Thread🧵
Let's start with productivity issues.

Type 1

Are you on #macOS? Here are some of my favorite #opensource tools I recommend.

🧵 A thread:
🎞 For your goto videoplayer, other than the built-in QuickTime or the classic VLC, you should consider IINA.

It uses mpv under the hood but provides a beautiful, macOS-friendly UI and plays everything you throw at it.
🧹 When your menu bar needs decluttering (and trust me, macOS bars gets cluttered when you have a lot of handy apps) and you feel the urge to hide everything under a carpet, there’s Hidden, an utility that lets you hide menu bar icons.

Those wanting to install two Mac OS systems on the same computer: don’t install in two volumes on same APFS container. Every time I boot in High Sierra it’s corrupting the Big Sur volume, & I had to reinstall. Try installing on two separate partitions. #BigSur #macOS @Apple
@JeffBenjam @9to5mac I tried your method. All went well for 2 weeks as long as I didn’t try to boot from High Sierra. Yesterday I did that. HS gave some error message which people have reported. Sadly when I booted back into Big Sur got a message that I need to reinstall the OS.
I thought may be an accident reinstalled Big Sur and was up and running after the installation. But when I booted to High Sierra and tried to boot back, same error and had to reinstall Big Sur again.

After months of hard work with @jblanchefr, @ClipDropApp beta (AR Copy Paste) is now publicly available on #Android, #iOS, #macOS, and #Windows

🔥 🔥

Here's a thread of what you can already do with it ↓ 1/n

You can capture directly from your desktop with a screenshot and drag & drop to any other app (my favorite feature 🤩)

It works from/to virtually any application & websites: @figmadesign, @Photoshop, @Canva, @Pitch, @Powerpoint, @GoogleDocs...etc!

#ML #Augmented #DesktopOS
You can extract anything: objects, people, drawings, and text. The quality of the salient object detection, background removal, and text detection is now quite incredible 😳😲🤯

So, the workflow: you’ve got dozens, if not hundreds of images to check. You have a finder window on one screen, you Quicklook an image onto a second screen, drag it larger, then go full screen. Every image you click now displays scaled to full screen size. #macOS #Mojave
You can do this one at a time, or as a slideshow - it’s an incredibly powerful workflow for dealing with lots of images. No having to bust out a DAM app, or open them all into Preview, just click and it’s there, you can even apply labels etc as you go. #macOS #Mojave
Well @Apple screwed this up in #macOS #Mojave as QuickLook will only honour an up-scale for the first image. From then on, any image that’s smaller than the pixel dimensions of your display will be at its native size. So the app-less fullscreen slideshow workflow is gone.

Managing Permissions in #macOS #Mojave
Yes, you can. But it used to be easier.

Can't Save Photoshop Files on Shared Folders Through SMB
Problem - saving a PSD on a shared folder results in this error:
“Could not save because write access was not granted.”…
Happens even with correct permissions.
The fix?
In Finder:
• Hide Preview when viewing files.
• Hide Preview -> ⇧ + ⌘ + P
• If Show Preview is enabled, de-select the file you’re working on in Finder before you save.

Also, in #Photoshop:
• Preferences -> File Handling -> File Saving Options -> Image Previews -> Never Save

A fun bit of #macOS development history I stumbled upon today, Apple Tech Note 2034.

Essentially it included a bunch of guidelines and tips on macOS development but contained such inflammatory assertions that Apple straight up *pulled* it down (2033/5 are still there)!
Among some of the the things that didn't sit very well with devs in the note:

- Positing Objective-C as being a more portable cross-platform language than C++
- Promoting hard-coded pathname APIs for accessing files over traditional Mac APIs
Reading over it, quite a bit of the punch is lost on me since I started in this industry in a professional sense in 2012. But the same conversations happen today - Objective-C vs Swift being a similar parallel in that it garners hot opinions, fast.
