The listening tour that @jack has been on as CEO of Twitter found its way to me this week. I recorded my one hour conversation with him on my iPhone 5. Then @Recode made a podcast out of it, with transcript. recode.net/2018/9/14/1785… 1/2
Among the things I talked about with @jack: an edit feature; a "live now" button you could turn on and off that would say, I'm on and reachable; what he heard from conservatives when he met with them; his view that Twitter should be an "impartial" platform— but not "neutral." 2/2
Ideas I suggested to @jack: Twitter needs public editors plural; tech companies pride themselves on being innovative but in their public communications it's the same old PR; I don't know how to alert @Twitter to a problem its people should look at. (He said tweet about it.) 3/3

Over the last few days, it's become clearer and clearer to me that, without intervention, coverage of the 2020 campaign is likely to be a disaster for everyone except Trump and his core voters, who want to watch it all burn anyway. In this thread I describe the danger I see. 1/
By "disaster for everyone," I mean all candidates opposing Trump, journalists themselves, voters from all sides (except those who have exited from the news system by merging with his hate campaign against the news media) and anyone who seeks the repair of American democracy. 2/
Start with the simple fact of inertia. In ruins after the debacle of 2016, the horse race model and "game" schema that have instructed campaign journalism for at least 40 years are up and running again. It appears the bosses have no better ideas, and no will to develop them. 3/

I asked @DavidMDrucker where he got his statement in Vanity Fair that "Trump brings a certain gravitas" to the presidency, since I have never heard anyone in either party observe that, and all the evidence contradicts it. vanityfair.com/news/2018/12/w… He answered me. Next slide please.
This is his answer. Apparently anonymous sources in the party told him that, and he worded the conclusion so it reads as a natural fact— not "insiders in the party say..." but just something everyone knows. Gravitas.
Still, the entertainment value in this explanation should be credited. "Listen, you didn't get this from me, okay? But Trump brings a certain gravitas to the presidency..." Anonymous sources say their guy is awesome.

I don't know how our journalists came to see "storytelling" as the heart of what they do, and "storyteller" as a self-description. I can think of 4-5 elements of journalism more central than "story." Truthtelling, grounding public conversation in fact, verification... listening.

Here are a few thoughts —>
1/ Explain this to your kids at the dinner table -->

OK to go to college, OK to get a degree, but building a life around the expectations of recurring future paycheque is NOT OK.

I do this religiously. Our dinner table conv is around biz/idea/innovation/tech, rest politics.
2/ Why?
There is an overwhelming chatter for kids to become a tech factory worker. From schools to colleges are teaching them to become one. This is no different from a mining job of the 19th century or an assembly line job of the 20th century.

I live out in farm country where it’s pretty quiet at night. I had to be up early for work this morning, so I was in bed around midnight last night. Around 12:15 AM every window in my house rattled as a Harley roared past at a high rate of speed.
There are two bars in the one horse town three miles away. I’m used to cars and bikes driving by a little too fast around bar time. This is Wisconsin after all. But this was different. This bike was LOUD, and hauling ass. With deer all over the roads, its a recipe for disaster.
Jolted awake by the picture frame rattling over my bed, I listened as the Harley roared off into the night. I could hear it go for quite a ways, much further than normal. It was really quiet, the sound traveled well.
