We've been focused on a singular goal- taking back Congress in the midterms. But this #SundayMorning we're discussing what happens when the election is over. On November 7th how will politics change?

That depends on the results of course.
Let's explore the scenarios.
(THREAD)
(2) Let's talk worst case scenario. Let's say the Dems don't win control of the House in the midterms.

I think in the immediate aftermath, there will be challenges to the results and protests in states where voter suppression played a role.

(3) In fact, there could be mass chaos on a wide scale simply because Americans no longer have faith in the electoral process. And that, combined with human rights abuses and rampant income inequality, is a dangerous cocktail that can lead to revolution.

(4) If Republicans cement control of all 3 branches for another 2 years, it's a nightmare scenario for many. We'd see threats to healthcare, aggressive immigration policies, and a continued authoritarian approach from this President.

It's a world I don't even want to imagine.
(5) Let's discuss the most likely scenario. Dems take the House but not the Senate. We'll see Dems have a way to use their power to push for further investigations and put pressure on Trump and the GOP.

But it needs to be a LARGE house majority.

(6) What we should be concerned about are the risks of a small majority taking the House & Trump crying elections were "rigged," one of his favorite excuses. We've already seen what his radicalized base can do this week when he uses violent rhetoric.

(7) Best case scenario: What if Dems take back control of the House & the Senate? To be clear, it's an unlikely outcome. Of course, you'll see immense pressure put on this administration.

But I think you'll also see the great realignment of the GOP.

(8) The GOP may scramble to appear more moderate. They may bend over backward to help Dems pass key bills on healthcare and then take the credit for being the party of compromise with independents.

They'd start trying to redeem their image ahead of 2020.

(9) No matter what happens in midterms, 2 things are certain:

-The race for 2020 begins the day after the election
-Midterm outcome changes political calculus for both parties

And I don't see any relief for the current political climate as long as Trump sits in the White House.
(END) Thanks to @anniegirl1138 for the #SundayMorning thread suggestion. Come back next week when we'll be on the cusp of midterms and ready to pull our own hair out from the anxiety.

Just kidding. Sort of.
