Just want to share my usual big biennial Fuck You to media & pollsters who relegate me, and families like mine, and everyone like us, into a junk drawer category of “other”, making any coherent statements about our political power impossible, and rendering us invisible once more.
There are over 5 million people of South Asian descent in the United States, more than the entire population of most states. Collectively, we are included only as part of “other” in every major poll, and we were mentioned zero times by all major TV news broadcasts.
We probably helped swing some of those races everyone is watching tonight, but we aren’t even give enough information to know. Another reason we have to organize and make sure to hold institutions accountable.

Just an update: the blue wave happened, and there are almost certainly entire districts that were swung by Asian American voters (perhaps even South Asian American voters), yet there are no stories about our voting. We’re fully erased from the narrative. Media renders us “other”.
