The massive growth in prosperity, standard of living, & arguably even democracy & equality in the 20th & 21st centuries have in large part been due to cheap, plentiful carbon-based energy. But in doing so, we have borrowed enormously from the future & polluted our own next. 2/
That cheap energy is running out, curtailing growth, & using what remains will further threaten the ecosystem we depend on. Some do not care & will exploit this crisis for narrow, short-sighted, selfish ends, making the world an even more dangerous place for many. 3/
Some say we should exploit the final flex of the springboard & ensure we expand human civilisation into space & exploit the resources there, before they run out here & we fall into a New Dark Age. Maybe, but in either case, the cost to billions of humans on Earth will be huge. 4/
We desperately & rapidly need to adjust our politics, institutions, & individual ideas to ensure that the human race can survive sustainably on this planet, in better harmony with the environment that sustains us. That will be hard, but the alternative is unthinkable. 5/5
