In 60 years, 3 territories have left EU: Algeria, Greenland & - soon - UK.

27 countries haven’t left.

That sounds like successful membership retention.
EU has lots of problems & things it should change. All regional organisations do.

But it’s inherently unlikely there was a better compromise which would have kept UK in *and* EU27 fully committed. >
EU’s policy is to leave national polities to debate national positions on EU. Cameron asked EU to make changes - they did - but they meant nothing to Brexiters. >
Should EU have spent its budget going over head of UK pols to explain itself better to British public than UK pols were willing to? Is that respectful? >
Or is @rcolvile ‘s beef that EU didn’t propose Treaty changes - the ones Cameron *hadn’t asked for*? Ending FMoPeople? Taking Turkey off accession list? What does he think would have swung it?
@rcolvile is right - it wasn’t “Immigration & busses”. It was something much deeper - a British nationalist idea that democratic international organisations don’t serve UK’s interests, because UK doesn’t control them.

There’s nothing EU could say about that. >
