Thread: It’s been long recognised that #climatechange is super charging extreme weather impacts - from super typhoons, hurricanes, to killer floods & droughts. This is happening at 1c. For the people of the global South there is no safe temp limit. theguardian.com/world/2019/mar…
climate change fans the flames of every existing inequality. So the people facing these impacts simply don’t have the ability to cope with such disasters. 70% of the world line in poverty & are not responsible for climate change. It’s the richest 10% who are
But climate change like slavery, colonialism & capitalism is deeply racialised. Black & brown people are sacrificed for rich countries & their corporations to continue to profit. The dead in Mozambique, Zimbabwe are just another number to add to that list
Scientists tell us that if we want to prevent a breach of the tipping point of 1.5c we have a decade to act. For people in the global South, ‘1.5c is to barely stay alive’. Last week saw the hugely impressive #ClimateStrike w/ young people on the streets.
For the NGOs, media & politicians who claim to be taking #ClimateEmergency seriously. Here’s the truth. If you say shit like ‘act for our children’s sake’.. you are part of the problem. What about the black/brown children dying now. Stop saying empty slogans like climate action
Tell the truth - for the UK to do its fair share of global effort - the UK must be at 93% reduction by 2030, plus £57 billion in support for poorer countries, plus billions more for adaptation costs & for damage. That tackling climate within capitalism is not possible.
Stop saying crap like 100% Renewable Energy or Net Zero. Only soln is energy as a public good, a global decentralised RE energy system, with a massive reduction in energy use together w/ total break up of agribusiness model with food as a right & agro-ecology as model.
It also means standing up for refugee rights - there is no such thing as an economic migrant only survival migrants, fleeing climate, poverty & conflict. A new right to move but also not to move. A right to a dignified life for all & not just the rich.
Otherwise claiming you are for #ClimateJustice is an empty slogan. The mainstream NGOs, campaign groups who are suddenly happy to promote it as a hashtag are the ones who knew the truth but continued to call for 2c, continue to push demands that sacrifice black/brown people
if you aren’t willing to stand with the global South & think their lives matter more than your fear of being seen as radical. Then get out of the way and spare me your crocodile tears. #climatechange needs more than empty words it needs #SystemChange
