India Digital News Report out from @risj_oxford. Shows English-speaking Indian internet users embrace mobile-first, platform-dominated media environment w/search+social+messaging apps key for how they access news. Main findings in thread, report here: reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/our-research/i… 1/8
India is a mobile first market, with 68% of respondents identifying smartphone as their main device for news, 31% saying they ONLY use mobile devices for news, higher than other countries we've surveyed. 2/8
81% say that distributed discovery, especially search (32%) or social (24%) is their main way of accessing news online, again, higher than most other countries we've surveyed. Only 18% say going direct to news website or app is their main way of accessing online news. 3/8
Facebook (52%) and WhatsApp (also 52%) are very widely used for news (and of course even more widely used for other purposes), and high numbers of respondents use multiple different social media and messaging apps for news. 4/8
Even as they actively use social media and messaging apps to access, share, and comment on news, many respondents worry about the potential implications. 55% say they fear expressing their political views on the internet could get them into trouble with the authorities. 5/8
While some individual news brands are highly trusted, overall trust in news is low, with respondents expressing more trust in news found via search (45% trust) than in news found via social media (34%), news in general (36%), or even the news they use (39%). 6/8
Low trust is tied in part to widespread concern over many different kinds of misinformation-not only fabricated stories (50%), but also over stories spun to fit particular agenda (51%) and poor journalism (51%) (#SoMe and messaging app users no more likely to express concern) 7/8
The India Digital News Report is written by @zeenabaneez, @TaberezNeyazi, @antoniskalog, and me, supported by Hindu Media Group, The Quint, Indian Express, and PTI, survey by @YouGov. Again, note, sample is English-language internet users.
