NPR: "new research has scrambled notions of how empathy works as a force in the world"

"one of the strongest triggers for human empathy is observing some kind of conflict between two other parties...."

Once they take a side in the conflict, they are drawn into the perspective of that side and not the other, leading to polarization.

In short, empathy is pathway to tribalization (and violence).
"Breithaupt and other researchers think of them (terrorists) as classic examples of people afflicted with an 'excess of empathy. They feel (deeply for) the suffering of their people.'"

However, this is selective empathy. They reserve empathy for the people who "deserve it."
"The new rule for empathy seems to be: reserve it, not for your "enemies," but... just for your own team. And empathizing with the other team? That's practically a taboo."
