Small thread on our our website, which was started on this day in 1994:
In 1994, there were 3 million people online. Today, there are 4353 million people online (according to IWS)
The Internet Archive did not yet exist in 1994, so the oldest copy of our site that they have is from 1996: web.archive.org/web/1996122214…
I believe we were the first security company on the web.
Companies like Microsoft, IBM and Apple did not yet have a website. And obviously there was no Google or Wikipedia back then.
We were the 17th website in Finland and somewhere among the first 2000 websites in the world.
Here's the original announcement I posted to the comp.infosystems.announce newsgroup (F-Secure was still called Data Fellows then)
Here's how we explained how to access our brand new website. Note that Netscape did not exist yet. Also note that Windows did not have TCP/IP built in yet.
One of the first features on our website was an online virus description database, providing technical analysis on malware we had reverse engineered. It's still online. Here's a sample of a description I wrote at the time: f-secure.com/v-descs/crepat…
Here's to the next 25 years, and long live the web!
/end
PS. Classic video clip on how we almost lost our brand new website.
