Most Americans oppose Donald Trump. They know his presidency is a blight. But do most people realize how bad things really are?
Let's start with the classic sign that democracy has failed: Investigating the investigators.
Now consider the advance of new laws criminalizing women's reproductive health and freedom. These laws are unlike anything we've seen and are a step along the path of overturning #RoeVWade. Rightwing extremist Republicans are conducting a full-scale war on women.
Consider the fact that the gun lobby and the GOP have pushed us so far to the right that school massacres are considered a fact of life and we are ARMING TEACHERS. These are outlandish, outrageous things that should never occur in a civilized society.
Anyone hoping the courts would be a line of defense against tyranny hasn't factored in #MitchMcConnell's methodical stacking of the judiciary with right-wing ideologues. #SCOTUS is already gone, one seat stolen and another filled with an accused sexual assaulter.
Think about extreme inequality, police brutality, climate denial, emboldened white supremacy, GOP kidnapping migrant children, people using GoFundMe to pay medical bills, mass surveillance through ever-more-invasive tech platforms ... the list goes on and on.
Meanwhile, the GOP has abandoned all pretense of caring about the Constitution. The Republican leadership's unwavering fealty to Trump has made a mockery of the rule of law. vox.com/2019/5/12/1861…
And to top it off, the Democratic Party leadership is dithering and pandering to MAGA voters. In some futile, poll-driven, focus-grouped hope that they can somehow defeat Republicans in 2020 by not rocking the boat, Dem leaders are effectively assisting the GOP.
All the while, MORE (white male) candidates join the over-crowded Democratic primary, turning what was a large, healthy field into a crap show. And the corporate media normalizes the entire mess, treating the fall of democracy as just another "both sides" story.
What gives me hope in this mess is that good, decent people are taking their political fate into their own hands, stepping into the leadership void and making a difference.
To each of you who refuses to back down, who speaks out and fights back, THANK YOU 🙏🏽🙏🏽
