Most number of casualties Pakistan has suffered were due to IED attacks and ambushes. In neighboring Afghanistan US losses are half due to use of MRAPs, CAS and AME. Many of these lives could have been saved had we prioritized blood over money.
Just to give you perspective, Army mainly relies on pickups and trucks of various companies but none of them has any protection against IEDs or firing if ambush is set from rocks or bushes by terrorists 700m away. Most lives lost in Balochistan and Waziristan due to it.
Even a small IED of 20kg can destroy and cause deaths easily in these vehicles and since no protection from bullets, leaves troops vulnerable to fire during ambushes too. No timely air evacuation causes death toll to rise of injured. MRAPs can sustain small IED attacks & firing.
Only a large IED can penetrate MRAP not small one, which can keep troops safe from blast and firing too while troops can fire from within the damaged vehicle with protection still and fend off terrorists.
These are 30 to 80 Kg IED hits on MRAPs. All soldiers remained alive inside, if it was Toyota Hilux, all soldiers would be dead. Just because of budget and funding issues Pakistan didn't buy MRAPs. No specially configured medical helicopters for air evacuation either.
