People are treating "why is the economy not lifting Trump's numbers?" like some great mystery, but I think the plain truth is most people remember the economy *was also good under Obama* People aren't canaries. theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
Like, we were ALIVE and CONSCIOUS during that Administration. We REMEMBER this happening: fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/fredgrap…
(employment embedded if you can't link from above) People got health insurance. A LOT of people got health insurance. We were HERE for it. We REMEMBER it.
The sole signature accomplishment of the Trump Administration is a giant tax cut that went to nobody but rich people.
Point is, if you ask most people if their "lives are better now than they were four years ago", the answer is ... not really. And if you're on the bad end of the tariffs, it is legitimately, lose-the-farm WORSE.
I mean, life is better for you if you want to say shitty things about Others or believe Jesus is coming back RIGHT NOW or you're a weekend Nazi, sure, you FEEL better. But if you just want to live your life, the constant anxiety and crazy makes you feel WORSE.
(This of course, is what Biden's betting on). But basically I just want chime in and say -- this is not a great mystery. People are bad at assessing abstract threat, sure, but this the Trump economy didn't change a lot of people's lives by any measure.
This may be placing an enormous amount of faith in the common sense of the majority of people, but the key to making bullshit work is short exposures.
I think people were right that 2016 was a change election -- but Trump hasn't given them that change. He's become more of the same. /XX
