The Democratic debates are tonight & lots of media about how candidates can appeal to Black voters. Here's an idea. Talk about racism in the criminal legal system, policing, the criminalization of poverty. Maybe have 1 of your 21 plans address all of this. theappeal.org/spotlight-pres…
Lest I be misunderstood, I do not think for a minute that the only issue that matters to Black voters is criminal justice reform. And I think we should LISTEN to Black people tell us what matters instead of talking at people.
As a public defender and someone passionate about racial justice, I am focused on this stuff, but I definitely know it's one part of so much more.

Let me correct @Enrique_Acevedo's recitation of the interview.

First question: Should the current facilities be shut down?

@BernieSanders: Yes.

Like literally within the first 2 seconds, he says they should be closed.

@Enrique_Acevedo's tweet says the exact opposite.
@BernieSanders: When we talk about providing accommodation to immigrants who have crossed the border we should not use the word detention centers because detention centers are jails. People who cross the border should not be in jails.

Yesterday we were discussing how best to arrange follow up care for a patient from a northern reserve.

Staff MD 1: Is there a hospital there?

Me: No, just a nursing station, and Edmonton is the closest tertiary centre.

Since this fool wants to come for my comedy crush @nicolebyer let’s break down ALL the issues with this foolish ass thread.
1: I’ve watched every episode of @NailedIt & to claim that Nicole Byer is only nice to black contestants is frankly a lie. However, even if that were the case, consider that this is a highly edited reality TV show which means editors choose which parts of her behavior we see.
2: Mr. Flores seems to lack a fundamental understanding of what #racism is so let’s review, shall we? Racism is fundamentally a belief that one’s own race is superior, however, in critical race theory, scholars also assert that racism must be combined with systemic power to work.

Being overly defensive about an issue automatically makes you biased in your analysis. Denying that #racism is a problem in #Libya is wrong. It is a problem in most if not all societies.
Nevertheless, claiming #slavery is a direct symptom of racism is worse.
Slavery, although motivated by racism, was abolished through legal reform. Racism was not abolished and most probably won't be.
It is 'logical' that in the absence of rule of law & the presence of policies that negatively disrupt migratory flows, slavery COULD reemerge. #Libya
The solution to #migration and #slavery therefore involves tackling different dimensions:
- Short-term: policy changes acknowledging #EU's interception at sea is illegal
- Medium-term: improving #Libya's economic & security capacity as transit state
- Long-term: tackling racism
