Just a reminder: Turkey, Baghdad’s central gov, Iran, Assad’s regime, Trump (Obama before him), Russia all agree on 1 thing: No Kurdish statehood.

All these players are happy to use the Kurds to advance their agendas then discard them.
As of the media outcry, and the outpour on social media, if that was worth anything, it’d have saved Syrians from Assad. The fact here is that the rules of the game in the middle east as they are are: the Kurds aren’t allowed to have their own state.
The thorny question here is: when were the Kurds betrayed by the US? Was it Trump pulling the plug? or was it when Obama decided to use them to fight ISIS without ever committing to secure at least an autonomy for them?
The Obama administration knew full well, that Turkey will NEVER accept a Kurdish autonomy on its doorsteps in Syria — even if it were run by Mother Theresa. Turkish nationalism can barely get over the fact that Aleppo and Mosul aren’t under Turkish control.
In the larger scheme of things, the US presence in Syria was always billed as temporary, and given that Obama’s and Trump’s administration NEVER committed to securing a Kurdish autonomy in Syria, what Trump just did was bound to happen. It was always a question of when not if.
As of sanctioning Turkey, and condemning it like some EU countries & the US did.. it’s all just hot air. They’ll all walk it back once the news cycle shift. See how many EU states & others are rushing to re-engage Assad. The reality is, the world isn’t a kind place for the weak.
Here’s a reality check: Is the US, France, Britain, Germany (leaders & voters) willing TODAY to impose a no-fly zone over Northern Syria and station a buffer force to fend off Assad & Turkey? the answer is NO. That’s why this whole thing was a charade all along.
I wrote this thread because the ambient hypocrisy has become suffocating. If folks in the Western world (outside Twitter) REALLY cared about the Kurds they’d demand their leaders do EVERYTHING neceaary to help. That means troops, budgets, and the willingness to fight.
My personal opinion is that the Kurds aren’t going to forget what just happened, and they are not goign to give up their dream. Sooner or later, they’ll reach it. Might take another 100 years, but they’ll get there.
Now I need to go catch some sleep, in order to wake up fresh to enjoy the diluge of insults inevitably coming my way from all involved parties. 😂
