Let’s consider what we got for the grifter @POTUS bargaining away my and your kid’s future: a corporate tax break that never trickled down to employees. A net reduction on those covered by healthcare and a decrease in life expectancy for those in poverty...
A global military presence with our military families continuously stretched thin - but now we’re switching sides to aid former enemies who continue to undermine our democracy, brutally killing journalists and pro-democracy leaders.
A complete roll back of our environmental standards - taking us away from the few international agreements and protocols that show even the slightest promise of forcing global leaders to change fossil fuel consumption patterns.
Unfortunate confirmation that, contrary to years of polite conversation where we women were told not to worry that the @GOP would try to take away women’s right to choose and much else that relates the human rights of all Americans - it’s all happening. civilrights.org/trump-rollback…
An immigration “agenda” never considered for legality announced on twitter ex: the Muslim ban, the human rights abuses at the border, using Dreamers as collateral. We’re now taking in 18k refugees a year when we have the greatest global refugee crisis ever w 65 million displaced
A #scotus with additions directly taken from the wish lists of neoconservative think tanks in Washington that don’t care about solving the problems of this country or its people whether their in Brookyln or Lancaster. But the court-packing gets even worse when we widen our lens.
This grifter who has no moral compass himself has appointed over 150 federal judges who may well outlive me. Whose decisions will affect my daughter and her daughter and yours too en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_f…
A rise in white nationalist hate crimes that have been given oxygen and audience right up into the White House Rose Garden. The grifter has given white nationalist extremists (all are extremists) free reign to terrorize our houses of worship, our community centers, our schools
Ever increasing student debt, so much so that generations of Americans will forgo home ownership. They forgo critical community careers like teaching or social work. Crushing student debt, alongside medical debt, will force many to think again about having a family at all.
Many will keep working 2-3 jobs to make ends meet as none pay a living wage. The grifter will claim victory at “employment levels” as he does “stock market performance.” But we know the truth that neither says anything about the quality of American life.
Behind this, lying, lack of interest, or ignorance (one never knows which it is mostly) lies real systemic economic challenges to be solved that never get addressed. The vast majority of people aren’t paid enough. Not nearly enough. We can look at charts to tell us this...
But you know that if you pull up to a McDonalds drive thru and the meal for your family costs more than the employee serving you makes in an hour, that’s a problem. It’s a huge one.
We feel the problem deeply but you can see it with resource allocation. The vast majority of recipients of SNAP(food stamps) benefits work. They’re just not making ends meet. We’ve discussed one of the problems- companies aren’t paying people enough so taxpayers left w the bill.
But it goes beyond that, to the conveniences created for us by the gig economy. We can make last minute decisions about purchasing, traveling, consuming. We like flexibility but we ignore the negative externalities that only grow w this grifter. google.com/amp/s/www.nyti…
Let’s talk about another structural economic issue. It’s not purely economic but maybe it will get more attention if we frame as such. We need federal #paidleave. The vast majority of workers get nothing. And that’s not just for women who’ve just given birth and can barely walk.
We make it near impossible for people to care for an ailing parent or grieve the loss of a loved one. salon.com/2019/09/30/whe…
Let’s add to this. We don’t give people the time to recuperate and recover from loss or change. Nor do we give them the resources to treat their mental health which is reasonably impacted. We have a massive and largely ignored mental health crisis in this country. #mentalhealth
You want to see a therapist? It’s probably not covered. You want your kid to talk to someone about anxiety? Schools aren’t provided real resources - no one but the wealthy have “access” broadly speaking. Part of the problem is we don’t talk about the problem. #StopTheStigma
When we talk about #mentalhealth @GOP wants to use it as a completely erroneous excuse against #guncontrol. As if our national mental health crisis has anything at all to do with mass shootings. It does not. The “mentally ill”, is by different statistics 1/4 or 1/5 Americans.
At some point the “mentally ill” is you. At some point the mentally ill has been me. I certainly had #postpartum #depression and as I look at my family it’s always been something generations have had to deal with. But we are largely dealing with it in silence and expensively.
The mentally ill are largely the victims of crime. Not the perpetrators of it. But let’s get past the lies of @GOP and the grifter. Let’s speak a language they pretend to care about - the economy. who.int/news-room/fact…
That’s right. Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. We are largely, as a country, ignoring the single largest contributor to disability. It’s Depression.
We can go from one issue to another because they are all connected. The reality of your childhood and the the support,or lack there of, from government has a direct connection to your physical health and life outcomes (statistically speaking) google.com/amp/s/www.psyc…
If, due to multiple generations of gov disinvestment, motived by race and class, you grew up with funding for policing over community resources - fewer low cost loan programs and more payday loan shops, it’s no surprise that you feel the cards stacked against you. They are.
Bad luck is like good luck. It accumulates. It allows a man born on third base to feel like he’s hit a home run every day of his privileged vacuous life. It gives him a buffer from reality to cast aspersions at true leaders who care deeply about the problems he can’t grasp.
It allows this grifter to occupy the White House - in our nation’s Capitol, and turn to Baltimore and spew lies and hate without ever caring about a thing called history. google.com/amp/s/www.wash…
One day, hopefully soon, the grifter will be gone. But the impact of so many people giving in to this destruction will be felt long after. Long after his memory ceases to be useful as a cautionary tale. Our kids will be picking up the pieces for every failure to act courageously.
The thing I find most promising is that new voices and new people are coming forward to say enough is enough not only of the grifter but more deeply - enough of this gilded age our leaders have allowed to pick up pace for decades unabated. google.com/amp/s/www.wash…
They’re already showing the bravery we all need. nature.com/articles/d4158…
