Often the argument "for" reservations in India stems from the conviction that nepotism rules in India and that the "disadvantaged castes" will suffer if the system is "merit-driven"

I disagree as nepotism has multiple axes

What describes nepotism best in India? A poll
Just to clarify on the choices -

Let's take a case...

Suppose you are a Tamil brahmin hiring manager in Delhi

Are you likelier to have a soft-corner for a fellow Tamil Non Brahmin from your native town?

Or a Delhi-based Hindi speaking brahmin?

I think Language trumps caste
Or even within the same lingual zone -

Would a Bihari Brahmin hiring manager likelier to have a rapport with a fellow Bihari Kayastha or Yadav?

Or a brahmin from Western UP?
If we believe that 2 is a bigger factor than 3, would Social Justice Warriors campaign for "lingual diversity" in hiring, as passionately as they campaign for caste based reservation?
Note : One is only referring to "Jobs reservation" here. As opposed to reservation in schools/colleges

It's amazing how people exclaim in opposite ways to the same number

E.g - Food habits

~30% of Indians abstain strictly from meat
Another ~15-20% eat occasionally

My reaction: Vegetarianism is v widespread in India

Liberal reaction:India is a predominantly non veg country
I'd like to think my reaction is more legitimate

Because the default for homo-sapiens is meat eating in most parts of the world

For most of human race, eating meat every day / every other day is norm

Strict vegetarianism < 5% in nearly all countries
So when you see ~30%, that's what should catch your attention

It should not lead you to exclaim how India is no different from the rest of the world in food habits

Yet the liberal reaction is one of trying to undermine / gloss over Indian exceptionalism in this regard

There are errors of omission here

Indian Muslims may rank low on many parameters. But who among them?

There are Muslim elites, exactly as there are Hindu elites. Heterogeneity in outcomes among Indian muslims is massive - far greater than heterogeneity of outcomes among SCs/STs
The only reason the muslim "numbers" may look worse is because a significant chunk of their elite moved to Pakistan in 1947

The size of the elite as a % of muslim population that remained in India is somewhat small, particularly in North India

Not the case in Kerala/Hyd though
The other point to note is -

Among the 201 MM Muslims in India, approximately 60-65MM live in the two poorest Indian states - Uttar Pradesh and Bihar

That's like 30-35% of the Muslim population

In contrast the % of Hindus living in these two states is a tad over 20%

"Professionalism" is one of those late 20th century "modern" words that conveys the spirit of our age

Basically it means

Don't get angry when you feel like getting angry
Don't be unpleasant when you feel like being unpleasant

Don't get too close to people. Nor seem too remote
I am not sure if the word "professionalism" was used in say 18th / 19th century

I doubt

That was an age when virtue was discussed and debated not in anti-septic terms
Discourse back then was never divorced from a religious understanding of a "good life"

E.g. Speak the truth. Be patient. Exhibit forbearance etc

These virtues were championed as they were regarded as inherently "good" as opposed to expedient traits that enable us to "get along"

From end 2012 to Q1 2019 (7yrs), China debt to GDP ratio rose 63.2% to 259.4% of GDP (meaning at end 2012 it was less than 200% of GDP). Unless that 63.2% credit/gdp was into productive investment that raises future productivity, the incremental capital to output (ICOR)worsening
The juxtaposition to China rapid growth of debt is the Eurozone deleveraging (credit/gdp ratio FALLING). Australia, Thailand, Malaysia & India have all deleveraged.

Indonesia capital market remains undeveloped & needs to deepen. Smallest debt to GDP ratio in Asia 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻.
How do u deleverage? Well, several ways but ultimately your DEBT has to rise LESS than your OUTPUT.

DEBT/GDP = ratio & that ratio has to fall.

If ur output (GDP) falls, then your debt growth has to fall FASTER! That is how you deleverage. How u do so is up to u. NIRP is 1 way

There is no alternative to "system" for average person and their children.

Following points are your weaknesses as a parent -
1. Anxiety about children's future (belief that world is terrible)
2. Fear of missing out if you don't do everything and more
3. Peer pressure (yes, it affects parents more than kids)

#Israel should give the SPICE 2000 to #Pakistan. We can make a better demo of the weapon system in action than #India airforce did on Feb. 26.
An Israeli source tells @Office_AQPk without attribution in response to this tweet: "SPICE 2000 is available to some international buyers. The scope for Pakistan acquiring this system is immense and open."
