I resent the fact that I have been reduced to a one issue voter. It breaks my heart that I can’t vote based on my concerns for social welfare, social justice, that my campaigning for homelessness issues, migrant issues, better mental health provisions will have to be put 1/9
on the back burner. I am devastated that after a lifetime of voting & encouraging people, particularly women, to engage & use the vote denied to so many of our sisters around the world, I am actually thinking about not voting. My strong feelings about Brexit & the need to 2/9
break down borders not create more will be put on hold. Why? Because the party that has always been my spiritual, moral, ideological home has become a home for racists, bigots, antisemites. Time & time again it has made it clear that my concerns & those of my community 3/9
aren’t important. They have paid lip service to our complaints, they have issued mealy-mouthed statements & there have been many heartfelt supportive tweets. But @UKLabour is being investigated by @EHRC for institutional antisemitism. Daily we are seeing candidates with very 4/9
troubling views being nominated by the party to represent us. The tiny British Jewish community is so much more than antisemitism. Brexit, the economy, education are issues that concern us as much as they concern the wider community. But we have to protect ourselves. We 5/9
have to ensure that our places of worship are safe, that our communities are not intimidated & threatened, that our history is not denied & denigrated. We have to do it because, when push comes to shove, on December 12th, what matters is who you chose to put in 10 Downing St. 6/9
There are good people in Labour, many who are friends & I know stand alongside me in the fight against antisemitism. I have the best MP in the country in @peterkyle, an honourable good man. But on December 12th I have to vote to protect my community against that ancient 7/9
hatred. This election won’t be about Brexit for me. In 2019 who I vote for has been determined by antisemitism. That is the saddest most chilling, terrifying thing to imagine. I wish it wasn’t so. Our community has spent the last 3 years trying to avoid this situation. 8/9
But our voices have been ignored. Now our only choice is to make our voices heard at the ballot box. To put aside all our other concerns & interests for the safety & security of our community. @UKLabour cannot be trusted to safeguard our future. We must now do that ourselves. //
