I no longer have patience with CLIMATE science deniers. They and the fossil fuel industry have delayed #ClimateAction for three decades. Now, my country, my second homeland, is on fire. All of it. Every single state. Precious wildlife vanquished. Human life lost. Homes destroyed.
2/ Forests devastated. Kangaroo Island is burning to the ground, along w/ some of the world’s oldest, most unique, irreplaceable species. Our fires are NOT normal. They are driven by global warming and #ClimateChange. World, please hear our cry: We are the canary in the coal mine
3/ Australia is a warning about the #ClimateCrisis gripping our planet. Deniers, step aside and let the rest of us do the work to reverse the damage humans have done to our environment. Lives are at risk. I, for one, am no longer standing by while you stifle efforts to reign
4/ in coal and gas provocateurs. The #ClimateEmegency is urgent and real. Climate change is not a belief system. It’s fact-based Science. NASA images prove arctic glacier melt. Seas are rising. Storms, floods, fires, temperatures (heat AND cold) are all more extreme.
5/ Someone said to me yesterday, re the intense heat and fires here, “Well, it’s your Summer in Australia. It’s supposed to be hot.” No. The problem is, our summers are growing hotter by degrees. Instead of a few days a year being over 100 degrees, there are now many.
6/ A couple of weeks ago, the average temp for our entire country was 106 F. That is not normal. Increasing temperatures have fueled years-long drought. Some rural towns have run out of water. Flora is so dry that lighting strikes, and yes, arson attacks, ignite wilder,
7/ less predictable, uncontrollable, in some cases, unstoppable, fires. Everything burns. Firefighters, who are on the frontlines of climate change, KNOW it’s real. They are witnessing phenomenon they’ve never seen before: like a fire tornado with wind speeds of 1150 mph
8/ that flipped an 80-ton fire truck end over end & killed a firey. I cannot tell you how frightening it is to receive cell phone warnings of catastrophic fire; to see whole towns burned—their citizens made homeless—people sheltering in the sea b/c fire has consumed the land,
9/ mass evacuations. It’s terrifying not being able to catch your breath because the air is thick with smoke, to cough up black ash. None of this is normal! We. Are. On. Fire. Our entire country is burning. Eco-systems are being destroyed. Animals, birds, insects, bees: creatures
10/ & trees & plants humans depend on for survival, are dying. Burnt in an instant or killed by smoke, toxins, drought, temperature rise. Farmers can’t grow crops. They’re having to shoot whole herds because they can’t feed & water them, or b/c the animals are too badly burned
11/ to survive. This is our cruel reality. We are burning alive. We are warning you of coming food insecurity, lack of water, ice storms & fire storms, floods & drought. It’s a matter of time before you know our grief & loss, the helplessness of being a Climate refugee evacuated
12/ from your home, the righteous anger of watching all this unfold while deniers say, “We don’t believe you.” I have no more patience for your disbelief. #ClimateChange is here & it’s NOW. Development of #greenenergy is no longer an option, it is necessity if the human race
13/ is to survive. #WaterProtection and clean air are essential. It feels a little bit crazy to have to state the obvious, but we’ve allowed special interest groups to govern the safety of our environment & they have failed. We, as consumers of Earth’s resources, have failed.
14/ It’s time for us to clean up our room and clean up our act. If we don’t change our habits, we will die. That’s the bottom line. Our children are already asking us why we haven’t been better stewards of their future. They have every right to ask; to skip school, to march,
15/ to protest. All this beauty, & we are ruining it for them. Time for us to take responsibility and ACT. There is no time left to waste. Australia is your warning. Look at what we’ve lost. Watch us burn. If you thought the world would wait for you to die before climate disaster
16/ arrived at your door, you were wrong. The #ClimateEmergency is here and it’s NOW. That’s not belief. It’s scientific fact.
