In 1869 a Swiss immigrant to Oregon, Kaspar Kubli, had a son who he named Kaspar K. Kubli, Jr. In 1921 that son joined the KKK because the group resonated with his conservative politics, and then in 1923 Kaspar K. Kubli became the Republican speaker of Oregon's legislature.
So if anyone out there thinks the writers' room has only started f*cking with us, they've been at it a long time, since at least that time a dude with the initials KKK joined the KKK and then advanced the KKK's agenda from his position as GOP speaker of the Oregon House.
This is a great book on the rapid rise and decline of the second KKK in the 1920s, with special attention paid to how that history played out in Oregon. google.com/books/edition/…
Aside from being filled with smart analysis and gobsmacking stories, the book also contains some arresting photos like this one, taken in a Portland church in 1922.
