Alright let’s talk about this Eyes Wide Shut tree. EWS, the greatest film of the 90s, is also a great Xmas film. Forget your Die Hards.
EWS’s art direction is magnificent. There are trees and lights throughout. On the street.
And so much interior. Lights in all nooks.
1999 so it’s all incandescent. Maybe the last great overtly incandescent film. Richest glow. You want to crawl into these trees and sleep a long deep warm sleep.
Sometimes there are daytime trees and you get to talk to @Alancumming
*not sure if anti EWS @‘s are coming in - my Kubrick filter sends them to trash so do not bother
Sometimes you get very bad news but the lights will still burn bright and warm.
Sometimes the warm light is paired with ultra light. A Manhattan dream.
Oh what you don’t remember it was an Xmas film? What were you distracted by? Tsk.
Layers of light
Sometime subtle. The haphazard lights are some of the best art direction detail.
Sometimes the light goes all white. A warning. Don’t talk to this guy.
The tree is the only thing in between them
Getting loose under the incandescent glow. The lights lead you to new places.
This shot is just up for a few seconds but look at those bough-stars on the walls. A universe.
During bad talk time there are no lifts.
Then things start to change. There’s hope.
The lights lead you in new directions.
Time to brood. Bad decisions.
Xmas lights are remixed rainbows
Here’s a montage of every Xmas tree in Eyes Wide Shut
Here is an essay on Xmas Wide Shut submitted by young @HeerJeet
More later maybe but that’s it for now
