President Barack Obama presents Congress with his first SOTU address. He called for a new political climate of “common sense” approaches that invest in the American people without building “a mountain of debt.”

At the end of his speech, Obama commented on the decision the week before in the case of Citizens United v. FEC. Causing a bit of a stir among politicians on both sides of the aisle. The closest precedent was FDR’s criticism of the court in a 1937 address to Congress.
