I read Kissinger, Schmidt and Huttenlocher’s @TheAtlantic article on the future of #AI, and given the article’s reach, I think it’s worth talking about a few things. Thread.
I recommend reading the piece which I find in parts very illustrative of the debate on #AI in the policy community (I’m defining ‘policy community’ very broadly here). theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…
Of course, the authors are highly respected (though not uncontroversial) individuals, and at least two of them know *a lot more* about #AI than I do, so I mean no disrespect. Still, a few things seem worth looking at closer.

Most important and first: Don’t create wrong incentives for your analysts, i.E. „time to alert close“ pushes your analysts in laxity.

#HappeningNow: #FBI Director Wray speaks to the Council on Foreign Relations about national security, the threat posed by China, and the need for strong partnerships across many sectors. @CFR_org ow.ly/BJWC50sfEXa
Director Wray: Threats we face today are too diverse, too dangerous, & too all-encompassing for any of us to tackle alone. As #FBI Director, I can see firsthand the incredible strides we’ve made toward keeping people safe from all kinds of harm, & from a wide array of bad guys.
Director Wray: 9/11 was a game-changer in so many terrible ways – not just for the U.S. & our own national security apparatus, but for the whole world. Those attacks blew apart any notion of separation between foreign & domestic threats.

The @BBFC #AgeVerification "Certificate Standard" has been published.

This is the document which is being proffered to protect the facts & details of _YOUR_ online #Porn viewing. Let's read it together!

What could possibly go wrong?

ageverificationregulator.com/assets/bbfc-ag…
@BBFC Well, that was fast:

"this is the foundation of the non-statutory, voluntary age-verification certification scheme (the Scheme)"

"Only age-verification providers that meet the requirements of the Standard…will receive certification"

What happens to the ones that don't?
@BBFC [ Incidentally, I am going through this in real time with a mug of coffee, so there may be some jumping back and forth. Don't expect perfection. ]

I submit: this event was elegant and full of the innovation community of Geneva. Also, if the camera was pointed the other direction, there was a chaos of robots and steampunk DIY 🤩

Yes, I did get very inspired by a chance encounter with the @EcolintGeneva #STEMcenter cross-disciplinary approach, and yes I did then bring their robots to this elegant event...
...and yes I did then get journalists, public and innovators to play with said robots 🤖... @RadioTeleSuisse @nicolascapt @ascaphe @opengeneva @HPE

I am saddened by how strongly I feel compelled to sign this letter opposing Judge #Kavanaugh's confirmation.

But as an administrative law professor, the decline in our respect for public institutions terrifies me.

<THREAD>

nytimes.com/interactive/20…
Scholars of administrative law, among other things, teach, study, and write about public administration. This is a topic which has been vastly underappreciated in our nation for some time. (Although after the 2016 election, enrollments in my class finally started ticking up.) /2
Failing to take serious the importance of public administration runs the risk that critical needs -- non-poisonous water, efficacious national and #cyber defense, due process of law, and other many important guarantees of our Constitution and our laws may not be implemented. /3
