#Primer on #Ethiopian Politics

#Unitarist Vs #Federlaist

- Has little to do with level of #decentralisation of power ordinarily associated with these notions

A critical mass of Ethiopians support #federalism-incl most, if not all, forces within ruling party - incl Abiy - 1
For #ethnonationalists, I believe, any politics based on individual #equality (citizenship or republican politics) is #Unitarist - so #Nigeria, #Kenya (which ban ethnic parties), #Germany and #UnitedStates are Unitary, regardless of their robust federal/devolved structures - 2
What ethnonatioanlists consider #federalist is actually politics based on #ethnicity - (which goes beyond ethnic federalism) - much like Arend Lijphart's prototypical #consociational system - so soemthing like #Belgium and #BosniaHerzegovina, but for 80+ ethnic groups – 3

Thread on the bipartisan resolution
Can those of you that are rallying against the bipartisan resolution please explain your reason? I am going to break this down, and I need a point by point response for these.
My reminder for all of you is that this is democracy in action, 1/
While the executive side (Department of State) partially passed judgement regarding the situation in Ethiopia. The legislative wing has looked into the situation even more. So they pressed for cessation of hostilities as expected of any friendly country who doesn't want war 2/
When asking 4 cessation they asked for Eth Gov. +TPLF + other forces to all stop. They didn't just make it on one side, because in reality war happens between 2 or more groups. You can't ask just one side to stop. They mentioned all the back and forth for the 2 years b4 the war 3/

Brief history of #Amharic

(I kinda did this during my sophomore year for a Linguistics paper so...... “just trust me bro”🙏🏿)
During the #Axumite Kingdom, the official language was Ge’ez, an ancient Ethio-Semitic language. Despite reaching vast areas (upto Yemen) during its heyday, Axum proper was considered to range from Northern #Eritrea in the north to #Shewa in the south
In the 10th century, #Axum was destroyed and replaced by the Cushitic-speaking #Zagwe kingdom, led by #Agaws. Ge’ez speakers were separated north and south with the Agaws taking up the territory in between. Worth noting that Agaw is called “Bilen” in #Eritrea.

1.Thread: Summary of Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed’s Response to the ETH. Parliament on 30 Nov 2020 on what has transpired from the day he assumed office leading up to the attack on the Ethiopian National Defense Forces #ENDF by the now defunct Tigray People’s Liberation Front #TPLF.
2. How did he come to office? The #EPRDF elected Abiy Ahmed as PM of Ethiopia in April 2018 upon the heels of massive internal resistance and unrest in the country. The #TPLF did its very best to elect its own figurehead but failed.
3.The first few months: The PM was a virtual prisoner at the palace and his every move was monitored. His and his own family safety was at stake, and in his own words, “I was not in a position to protect my family, let alone protect the country and discharge my official duties."

#Afroptimistic Sunday: (T)Horn of #Africa Edition

Looking at the #Ethiopia|n War in Tigray & the ensuing carnage--death, dismemberment, displacement--& #Eritrea|s "self-defense" foray, there is not much to be optimistic about, but there could be if we act as Citizens of the Horn
The Horn of #Africa has no citizens, just subjects.

Citizens are free and, collectively, own sovereignty. They hire and fire their leaders.

Subjects are powerless, looking up to The Sovereign, who demands total obedience. Dissent results in disappearance, death, exile.
While this is true of all the nations in the Horn of Africa, this thread is about #Ethiopia and #Eritrea, who have not been able to extricate themselves from wars (declared and undeclared) since at least 1961. It's from the perspective of a member of the #Eritrean opposition....

#Eritrea: Portrait of a zombified state:

(A Thread)

On #COVID19, #Ethiopia’n civil war, #Tigray, #TPLF, #Refugees. (1)
#Eritrea is state where fiction pales when compared to everyday reality. Complete information blackout, #PFDJ’s utter disregard of domestic affairs, citizens increasingly growing indifference combined, have created a new reality or close to reality TV show. (2)
Since April 1, it has enforced the strictest lockdown. No public transport; schools (except the military school in Sawa) still closed & no hint of opening; public places closed. Gov. boasts for putting #COVID19 under control but no hope of easing the lockdown: it served well. (3)

Will Tigray leave or remain in #Ethiopia?

#TPLF's calculated moves so far could assist with predicting the likely future of #Tigray.

The current TPLF (since #Abiy came to power) had been carefully following procedures when it comes to dealing with the federal govt. 1/12
#TPLF had been releasing a number of statements/announcements, both written & verbal, which may seem pointless to the juvenile, naive and/or intentionally deaf ears but they're calculated & sensible than anyone could imagine. Every statements had some reasoning behind it. 2/12
#TPLF peacefully handed over power to #Abiy in the hope that he will execute #EPRDF’s future plans in line with the party member’s agreement. Unfortunately, Abiy had other sinister plans. Abiy & Co. fooled TPLF & managed to successfully undertake the #SoftCoup. 3/12

Here is my take on #EPRDF's statement released today - rather a rebuttal to #TPLF's one released on 15/10/19:

N.B. It shouldn't have been referred as EPRDF's statement but I am going to let this one slid. 1/9
1) #EPRDF indicated: #TPLF said the merger plan started since #Abiy took power. Wrong, TPLF said the reverse, admitted its involvement in the past & confirmed they aren't ready to join now due to the current unstable situation in #Ethiopia & the unsustainable move by others 2/9
2) Since #Abiy came to power, he was presenting himself as the originator of the merger plan & was taking all the credits - why is he now saying it was #EPRDF's idea & #TPLF was involved, etc i.e. why is he retreating when the gone gets tough. He can't have it both ways! 3/9

The new coalition party "#Ethiopian Prosperity Party" (#EPP), "የኢትዮጵያ የብልፅግና ፓርቲ" (#ኢብፓ) formed by PM #Abiy raises a lot of questions than answers about Abiy's ability to lead.

See below list of sensible questions that are worth digesting. 1/7
1) #Abiy has been, and still is, doing anything he wants under the #EPRDF umbrella. So, why form a new party now considering the upcoming election is just round the corner? Surely, he cannot say that #EPP has all the logistics in place to be a competitive democratic party. 2/7
2) Is it really #Abiy's own decision/choice to form #EPP or there are lobbyists influencing in the background? If the latter, who are they & what are they after?

3) What is going to happen with #TPLF e.g. is Abiy going to now have different means & power to challenge TPLF? 3/7
