Today an influential but sadly flawed 'consensus' pours water on adverse #BrainHealth risk and #neurodegenerative disease/ #dementia in former contact sport athletes.

Meanwhile ⬇️
"But it's a consensus of experts!"

Nobody can be an expert on everything, not even #CISG

Recognising this, Statement authors commissioned reviews by selected specialist 'expert' authors to review literature*, led by small subgroups of #CISG panel

These sub-groups then fed back outcomes from the review processes, which wider Statement authors voted on, so producing 'consensus' positions.

What does this mean?

It means that for late effects, by example, only 7/31 Statement authors actually reviewed the literature

Magnesium is a mineral that is highly abundant in the human body and is considered the second most abundant mineral hanging out in your intracellular spaces. 🧵 (1/11)
Magnesium plays a crucial role as a cofactor in various physiological processes such as protein synthesis, energy production and storage, reproduction, DNA and RNA synthesis, and maintenance of mitochondrial membrane potential. (2/11)
If you want healthy functioning #mitochondria, then you best supplement magnesium. And if you have any cognitive symptoms, it's time to get extra serious about your magnesium supplementation. (3/11)

A fascinating symptom in #neurology is #Alien Hand syndrome
If anyone has seen @StanleyKubrick ‘s great film Dr. Strangelove, you might have wondered what’s wrong with the titular character

His hand has a #mind of its own!!!

Simplifying , for carrying out bimanual planned movements, we need a Supplementary Motor Cortex (SMA) (left frontal lobe). This communicates to the opposite side via the corpus callosum. Lesions in any will impair proper bimanual function and cause an “alien limb”#neuroanatomy
Frontal variant (left sma lesion) : Patient will have impulsive groping and difficulty releasing objects
Affects the dominant hand
Can be due to a #stroke, #degeneration

My patient impulsively grabs my hand (with his right hand) despite me telling him not to!

#3 OMEGA 3s. Fish Oil, Krill Oil, Algae Oil are all good sources of Omega 3. Be careful the EPA/DHA ratio. EPA helps with inflammation/DHA helps with cognition. You need both! Opt for a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio of DHA to EPA (2:1 ratio eg. 800 DHA/400EPA) amazon.com/3Care-Concentr…

@ThinkingAboutV @nanopore The applied omics market based on #NGS technology is still an incipient market if we compare it to more established #diagnostics markets. But we are not far away from a point in time where every newborn's genome is ...
@ThinkingAboutV @nanopore ... sequenced at high quality (long reads, maybe with PCR-free including epigenome marks), and kept as an #EHR in the health system for future use. From then onwards, there will be recurrent #LiquidBiopsy assays, maybe once a year, to screen for a multitude of conditions.
@ThinkingAboutV @nanopore From 40-45 yo onwards, mainly cancer screening of healthy individuals, based on a #MachineLearning cancer classifier such as shown already by @GrailBio / $GH and others, but also other classifiers will come soon, such as #epigenomic profiling of #Neurodegenerative conditions, ...

2/20 @bwfalcon, now a group leader at @MRC_LMB, worked on the structure of Tau filaments @imprind, showing how they are misfolded in the brains of people with #neurodegenerative diseases.

3/20 #WorldBrainDay 2020 is dedicated to raising awareness of #Parkinsons disease. There are currently no disease-modifying treatments for mild cognitive impairment in PD; the #PD-MIND project aims to test a new drug to treat this condition. Find out more:bit.ly/PD-MIND

Shoutout to #EAN2020 @EANeurology for the high yield pearls on #ataxia. Checkout the free #EAN2020 #ataxia workshops for more details but here are a few with my added comments. #MedEd #neurology #MedStudentTwitter #AcademicChatter #doubledoc #neurologyresident @movedisorder
If you think the patient has cerebellar ataxia, think about acquired vs inherited causes. Most common acquired causes are Vitamin (E, B12, B1), Immune (Celiac), Paraneoplastic (Hu, Yo, GAD). Or VIP -cuz it’s Very Important to rule out - as these can be treated. #MedEd #MedTwitter
Then if it’s an older person with autonomic and/or Parkinsonian symptoms - think #MSA-C. But this is #neurodegenerative. #MedTwitter #MedEd #MedStudentTwitter #AcademicTwitter #doubledoc we need research on how to delay progression. @movedisorder
