This briefing is absurd for several reasons.
1. The UK is years away from agreeing a visa regime - let alone building the infrastructure - with the EU so it has little idea what controls will look like....

2. Since most UK arrivals are UK nationals, the UK only lanes would surely fill up quickest, creating the gloriously self-defeating comedy of EU nationals walking through emptier lanes more quickly while redfaced Brits queue on proudly - and separately...
3. Unless this was a UK AND Irish passport lane they would be in contravention of the Good Friday Agreement. Not the spirit of it, but the letter. It would clearly breach citizenship guarantees.

One constant thing about British-Irish affairs is how prominent things appear in historic terms while barely registering in electoral terms. Every documentary and book about Blair features Good Friday and his role. But it won't have won or lost him a single British vote...
Perhaps more so with Thatcher: hunger strikes, Brighton bomb, AIA. You can't study her era without understanding but they had practically zero electoral import in 80s. Same with Wilson/Heath and the start of the troubles...
Irish issues end up shaping British history all the time but there's a pathological electoral indifference that prevents people from seeing it.

This meeting may be more important than Chequers. EU will probably accept a fudge on the future relationship that allows the Tories to remain unsplit until after next March (it will after all only be a pol declaration) but not will accept fudge on the Irish backstop (THREAD)
People forget the EU has always seen withdrawal and the future as separate negotiations. The Irish border is the bit they demanded certainty on. And in order to get progress to trade talks, the UK agreed to a backstop (albeit with internal contradictions in the text)
If all the UK can agree on future trade is a vague political document without guarantees, the EU can probably agree, but that obviously creates even more imperative for the Irish govt to demand a clear backstop. Which means the real potential blockers aren't ERG, but DUP...

The de-othering of Northern Ireland happening in the rest of the UK (and the rest of Ireland - see increased Varadkar engagement) is a good thing in the long term. But it will be bumpy (1/)
the reason NI is the central dilemma in Brexit is because it is a contested space in which the UK has consented to a slight smudging of sovereignty to accommodate its unique connection to another EU member state... (2/)
the irony was that a settlement designed to highlight connections to both the UK and Ireland had the effect of reinforcing NI's separateness from both. Brexit, and the myriad consequences (including DUP C&S) has drawn attention to this in a way that is uncomfortable... (3)

Getting Member States involved in #Brexit negotiations will not help the #UK. It will most likely fuel domestic politicization of Brexit in #EU27 countries. This will be detrimental to UK interests.
UK #Brexit strategists and commentators as diverse as @Jeremy_Hunt, @CER_Grant , @anandMenon1 and @fromTGA warn about the dangers of No Deal for British public opinion and call on #EU27 member states to get involved.

The British people will hate the EU for a generation, they warn.

The idea/hope is that MS governments will be more willing to give in to British demands. I think this is a flawed argument that overlooks the dynamics of politicization.

This is almost certainly not possible, and absolutely certainly not in our gift. England and Wales (hereinafter #EW) seemed destined for a very hard crash out of the #EU. >>>

Today, @CER_EU publishes my piece on #Brexit and #JHA. I have been looking at this for 1,5 years so I hope I did not make too many mistakes (links to piece - cer.eu/publications/a… and opens thread)
At the outset of the #Brexit process, most people assumed that a deal on #police and #judicial co-operation was easier to get than one on #trade. Time has shown this is not the case. Ongoing co-op on #JHA is one of the few items yet to be agreed on #withdrawal deal. Why?
Well, because the #EU and #UK's opening positions in the #negotiation are incompatible: Britain wants a #bespoke agreement with the EU, a la #Schengen, but is not willing to accept #ECJ or #EUCharter. EU wants to replicate existing models. What to do?
