Land Rover promotes an amazing journey across Africa that would be impossible to do with a current Land Rover. I still remember when Land Rover randomly stuck my photo and story inside the Range Rover owner's manual and never bothered to ask permission.
The 1955 Oxford & Cambridge Far East Expedition was the first classic long range event in Land Rover history. Worth a watch.
A modern look back on the expedition. The idea that you can drive around the world without major conflicts up until around 1979 is poignant.
The Camel Trophy began in 1980 in the Amazon and was actually copied from the cigarette ads with Germans using jeeps. It grew into a brilliant event that I had the privilege to be part of driving across East Africa as part of the US team. thedrive.com/watch-this/994…

The Camel Trophy concept was used by RJ Reynolds to promote the Camel brand where cigarette ads were banned. Despite the macho look, sales plummeted in the States. Until they invented penis-nosed kid friendly Joe Camel in 1988. So much for role models. vintageadbrowser.com/joe-camel-ads
