There's something oddly comforting about the patronizing belief that people in mainland China are brainwashed into willed ignorance of Tiananmen.

The more disturbing notion is that awareness of what happened is actually pretty high, but terrifyingly hazardous to communicate.
I'm reminded of this (IMO, flawed) study that led to many takes on how Chinese students were incurious about alternatives to the Party's view on everything:
Inhabitants of totalitarian states are generally much more aware of what's going on in the outside world than their governments, or foreign observers, would imagine.
