I watched this video last night and it's still freaking me out. A deep fake where Bill Hader *turns into* Tom Cruise and Seth Rogan *while impersonating them*. (via @MohamedGhilan / Ctrl Shift Face on YouTube)

Anyways, imagine when this is all properly weaponised on top of already fractured and extreme online ecosystems and people stop believing their eyes and ears.
@MohamedGhilan True videos will be called fake videos, fake videos will be called true videos. People steered towards calling news outlets "fake", will stop believing their own eyes. People who want to believe their own version of reality will have all the videos they need to support it.

It's worth watching the whole 6 minute clip of Jonathan Powell from @BBCNewsnight the other night. It's a view rarely expressed in the UK on a mainstream news show, and @maitlis (who I admire) seemed a little perplexed by the statement of the actual detail
@BBCNewsnight @maitlis It has been a consistent problem that British media has had since before and after the referendum - this stuff is complex by its nature and has to be explained. Remember: Irish people watch/listen to British AND Irish shows. We see the differences in questions, coverage, emphasis
@BBCNewsnight @maitlis Invariably we are armed with greater understanding of Ireland because, well, we're Irish. I'd argue the UK press has in general fundamentally failed or were very slow to understand Ireland's role. And still in many cases don't. This includes the most popular UK shows.

So two very clearly fake videos this week and many, many people are falling for them. It will be funny until it's more serious, and we have a war or the end of democracy or something.
The first was the Korean park ride that had been digitally altered to make it look far more extreme than it actually is. The second is a parody of a Boston Dynamics robot. If it looks too good to be true...
And people will say: sure I thought it was real, what's the harm? And yes that's mostly true. But other people are watching to see how easily the fakery spreads, and these lessons *will* be applied for more nefarious purposes. Are we ready?

Last week I travelled to Dharamsala to the residence of the #DalaiLama.

He’s lived in exile in India for more than 60 years, after China sent troops into #Tibet in 1959.

As he approaches his 84th birthday I asked him a range of questions.

The Dalai Lama was scathing about President Trump arguing he has “no moral principle”. He hit out at his America First policies.

Swing away from #Leave is widespread and happening broadly across the UK, specifically in England, Wales, Cornwall and the North. Overall estimated level of support for Leave is 6 percentage points lower across UK, but masks significant heterogeneity. 2/
We follow similar approach as in earlier work with @essobecker and @DennisNovy to decompose the geographic variation to identify which factors are capturing the variation across the UK in the swing away from #Leave to #Remain.... 3/
