Hong Kong's "Summer of Dissent" [thread]. I'm starting a series of illustrations to explain some of the context of the current protests. I think what is happening right now is history in the making and I want to add perspective to some of the reporting I've seen. #hongkongprotest
1: The extradition bill and why HK people are still angry about it. Next up: how the relations between protesters and the police have deteriorated. #hongkongprotest

2*: A graph of the biggest Hong Kong protests to date, updated after the massive, peaceful gathering on August 18th. Organizer estimate: 1.7 million. Police estimate: 128000 (counting only the approved part of the protest).

3: The "Hong Kong Way" & the diversity of the people supporting the protests. After 3 months the HK government has yet to enter into meaningful dialogue.

Correction and update: my initial chain length source stated 32km, not 42km, but updated estimates now say that 210000 people attended the HK Way and that it spanned 60km scmp.com/news/hong-kong…
4: "White Terror" and why the Emergency Ordinance might be a bigger concern than the PLA marching in right now. #HongKongprotest #HongKongprotests

5: A 100+ days later & with no end in sight, symbolic protest becomes increasingly important to keep the movement going. Here are some striking examples. #Hongkongprotest #HongKongprotests

5.1:
HK gov: Remember, we're going for "clear and clean". If you can't get it off, just paint over the ugly parts.

HK ppl: Be fast enough and the wet paint can be used as glue :)

See here for a video and progress-photos of one Lennon wall being painted over and re-installed the same day Feel like this paint-and-plaster battle is the ultimate metaphor for what is happening right now.
