So we've just had a day of speculation across the entire media about an election announcement that didn't happen, alongside widespread reporting of Johnson's new dog. Isn't it time political journalists stopped jumping every time the government says "jump"?
Political reporting, almost everywhere, has failed us again and again. It has lost perspective and distance until it is now, with a few exceptions, little more than a tool of government.
Two principles I would like to see political reporters embrace:
1. Report what you know, rather than speculating on what you don't.
2. Distinguish between what is salient and what is important. Most of the time they are *not the same thing*.
But even this is scratching at the surface of the problem. Chomsky's analysis of the media remains spot on.
